"Imagine hundreds of thousands of great short videos, and other media, explaining every topic taught to school kids. Imagine them rated and sorted into a giant Directory, making them simple to find. WatchKnow--as in, "You watch, you know"--is a non-profit online community devoted to this goal."

So what is the purpose of this site? It's simple. We want to share how technology with people quickly. Each video on the site will be under ten minutes. This is about the same length as my attention span and perfect for showing at the end of a staff meeting. Of course there are some sites like this out there already and we will link to similar sites on the homepage.We may end up having a few different videos on a topic e.g. Beginner's guide to Twitter and Advanced use of Twitter, but generally it will be short and simple. Anyone can upload a video, and you can do this in two ways. Either create a video and upload it to Youtube, Vimeo, Viddler etc and send me the link or email me and I'll give you access to add it to the blog yourself. It all depends on your level of WordPress knowledge really. Obviously some schools have some of these sites banned, so we will try and embed a video from one site and provide a link to others too. To make a video you will need either some screen capture software such as Camtasia or Jing or just use a webcam or video camera. You could be out and about filming, it doesn't need to be a video of a computer screen. the videos can be for 'free' software or for paid-for content, however…they can not be a sales pitch. If I deem the video to be more of an advert than a how-to guide, I will remove it. It should focus on how the software works and how it can be applied in the classroom. You may use these videos wherever you like, in a staff meeting or when working with teachers etc but please just leave us a comment to let us know that they were useful.

With its open-ended nature and robust creation tools, Minecraft has been used to create some amazing things. And as one teacher learned, those very same elements that make the game so compelling also make it a great educational tool. Classrooms have come a long way. There's been an exponential growth in educational technology advancement over the past few years. From overhead projectors to iPads, it's important to understand not only what's coming next but also where it all started. We've certainly come a long way but some things seem hauntingly similar to many years ago. For example, Thomas Edison said in 1925 that "books will soon be obsolete in schools. Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye." I'm pretty sure this is exactly what people are saying these days about the iPad.

"Communication centers, computers, laptops, mobile phones and tablets have all been spoken about at one point or another as technologies with promising applications for education. But mobile phones stand apart in an important way. In United States high schools, 98% of students have access to some kind of smartphone, according to a report by Blackboard and Project Tomorrow. The United Nation's International Telecommunication Union estimated that there were 5.3 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide at the end of 2010 - and that a full 90% of the world population now has access to a mobile network. In contrast, only about 2 billion people have Internet access. Students around the world are increasingly bringing their own mini-computers (or some connected device) to class. Whether this creates a distraction or a boon to learning is debatable, but these four uses of mobile phones in education - and countless others - could one day help prove the latter."

"Every teacher is taught that back up plans are a must. Things change constantly in education and there are a variety of factors that can make plans change - computer breaks, internet goes out, file is corrupted, forgot your flash drive at home, you finish a lesson early with a class, your class has very low attendance due to a school activity or event (like AP testing, prom, etc), lesson runs long, students don't understand the material, class is interrupted by a fire drill. To deal with these issues, teachers must have back up plans ready to go and be flexible and organized. Here are some tips and resources for backup plans."

This article reports on a five-year longitudinal study which investigated teachers' use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the classroom. The study, involving five teachers at primary and secondary schools in New South Wales, looked in particular at how ICT was incorporated into the participants' teaching practices over time, and why. The teachers clearly developed their use and understanding of ICT over the five years of the study; however, they did not adopt constructivist styles of practice in their use of ICT, as is often expected of teachers. The teachers largely held to teacher-centred practices, but had nevertheless incorporated ICT into their teaching in ways which reflected knowledge needed for today's society.
