British serials were the precursor to the modern magazine.  This website archives several serials from the nineteenth century.  The serials brought reading material to the working and middle class in a regular and affordable manner. These periodicals reflect the time and culture of nineteenth century British society.

The United States Department of Agriculture sponsors this informational site. Students can learn about the different food groups and what they should eat to have a healthy diet. There are tips about physical activity and food choices. There is even an interactive section in which students can personally plan their meals, investigate the different foods they eat using foodapedia, and they can assess their foods and physical activity. I think this is a valuable site because students learn about healthy choices.

This is a great, easy to navigate site.  It includes many aspects that would enhance our 3rd grade curriculum, such as communities, branches of the government, and how laws are made.  It puts these in an easy to read format, and if you have struggling readers or vise versa, they can read the corresponding section from a different grade level.

This is a good site to attract teens. It is also a site that can be used for the Senior Project as well as some possible science research.

First hand accounts, illustrated with vintage photos, original radio broadcasts. Great source for biographical accounts, cultural views of specific eras. Could be used for the Rendevous project.

Good source for periodical items that include many different topics. You can view some letters, pictures, ads, etc. All of these things can give one a view into the culture of the day. Could be a good source for some biographical information which might not be found elsewhere.

Excellent source for American historical research. Original documents available by subject or by era. Could possibly be used for the rendevous project.

This is a great site to use for primary sources practice. You can work with the activities given or do as I've done and have students compare the information they can get from primary sources versus secondary sources. The set up of the activities in investigation form can be quite appealing for students as well. I think this would be good for 5-12 grade.

This site would be of interest to more visual learners, as well as anyone trying to get an image of a historical event. While most of these are digitized images, you can also see whether or not the original is in the Library of Congress archives. In my opinion this gives more credibility to the digitized item. Everyone can get some use from a picture - P-12.

The Making of America is a digital library of primary sources in American social history. The collection covers the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The site has a subject browsing feature that makes it very easy to navigate.

The American Civil War Homepage gathers together in one place hypertext links to the most useful identified electronic files about the American Civil War (1861-1865). This site has everything from battle plans to genealogy.

This site discusses what climate change is and what can be done to help it. Current news and data streams about global warming and climate change from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Student friendly site with lots of resources for teachers.

The Kids in the House Web site is provided by the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives to provide educational information about the legislative branch fo the U.S. government. This site provides activities, resources and lesson plans for students K-12. The grade school section has a segment like the School House Rocks "I'm Just a Bill"

This site integrates global issues & cultural awareness through a variety of learning activities. The site has and educator section that is incredible, it has lesson plans divided by grade level, region and subject area. I really enjoyed the languages section. The Peace Corp Challenge Game was a lot of fun.

Cool site that covers Roman, Medieval/Anglo Saxon & Medieval European recipe collections. This would be a fun addition to World History. You could also use this in Math converting measurements.

This official White House site is geared for secondary and older. The students can learn about the branches of government both Federal and State governments. They can find contacts for the representatives in both Houses as well as the Cabinet. Blogs and podcasts of the Presidential addresses are posted here as well as current information about bills being debated. There is also historical information about the White House, Presidents, and First Ladies. 

This site provides current news related to the Earth and is processes. Of particular interest to science and social science teachers are the articles on climate change , nature and wildlife, emerging diseases, and the tracking of earthquakes, volcanoes and hurricanes. 

This is a tool provided by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to help teachers organize their instruction of the Holocaust. It speaks to the rationale for the teaching and provides guidelines for teaching about genocide, a very sensitive topic. There are also links for both teachers and students which give a comprehensive understanding of the Holocaust. The images and first person accounts are riveting.
