This site provides primary sources with lots of topics for research. Students can browse through historic newspapers, old photographs, film, sound recordings, and more. Some of the topics include American history, maps and geography, religion and philosophy, and sports and leisure. There are even short webcasts that are very informative.

This site allows its users to search collections that include: American memories, print and photography, historic newspapers, preforming arts, veteran's history, sound recordings, film, maps, and manuscripts. Users can access and research this information via digital collections (i.e.) podcast, websites, iTunes or they can search the library catalogs that will prompt them to do a basic search or guided search to ensure they are locating the correct information

This is a good site for those seniors whose Senior Project topic is on environmental issues. It is a springboard for choosing a specific focal point. It would also be good for the students to use for choosing an action plan for their project. Site is also a great science site for younger kids if you choose to look at only the bullet facts provided.

This EPA site gives the reader lots of options. One can learn about information where you live, popular topics, and current environmental news. I typed my zip code and found out the air quality, water and land information, the health risks, and energy produced in my area. I also explored some of the topics such as health and safety issues. Students could use this site to approach project-based learning and inquiry projects.

A great resource on Nebraska history from pre-1500 to present day for teachers and students. Lesson plans are geared toward 4th grade. Site includes archival photos, letters, video segments and maps.

Teachers and students are able to find and learn about Nebraska from this website. The time line makes it easy to find information in a chronological order. Photos, letters, video, maps and other formats of information is available. Fourth graders focus on Nebraska History in Social Studies, and this website offers relevant information that they can use outside of their textbooks.

This website offers a variety of primary source material from 18th Century America. Scenes and portraits from original newspapers, magazines, maps and writings are just as they appeared more than 250 years ago. Also a scrolling of "what happened on this day in early America" for upper elementary to 12th grade.

This site has lots of primary sources including pictures, maps, etc. that pertain to early America. This site would be great for teaching history.

This site is organized in a student-friendly format. The text is large, descriptions are concise, and the toolbar on the left side of the page helps students navigate easily. I love the inclusion of "Freedom Documents" as well as "Rare Images." The "Join or Die" propaganda from the "Rare Images" tab is also featured in our social studies text (students can make a text-to-media connection). "Pages from the Past" gives students a glimpse into colonial-era printing and publication. What an authentic experience!

Great primary source for all types of learning about money. This website has interactive games and activities that are really fun. It also has a great link for educators.

This site tells students all about the money we use every day.  There is also a teacher's section which provides lesson plan ideas.

This website allows you to see virtual exhibits from historical events. It also has a teacher page with information to aide with using this source. I appreciated the ease of using this website.

Search digital collections on this website to see all sorts of print, radio, and TV ads for various companies such as Kodak, Palmolive, Pullman, and Coca Cola. I think that social studies teachers would use this site quite a bit when studying certain eras or when looking to compare the past with the present. There are also propaganda posters from different time periods that could be used when studying U.S. and world history.

This website is a great resource for students looking for information about the Holocaust. Besides their own archive of Holocaust material, they have links to several other sites which also have primary archival material. This would be a great palce for students to use for their senior Holocaust projects.

The National Archives site allows users to find primary sources within the seven categories found under "Research by Topic". Students and teachers would use this site mostly for social studies, history, and science. I was able to find mostly photos, but some other documents as well. This could be used for any age group, but I think most of the content would be for middle or high school students.

At this website, users will find photos, diary entries, patents, and other artifacts documenting the inventions of the Wright brothers. I think that this site could be used by students in grades 4-12. Science and history teachers would find this site most useful. I thought that it was a little easier for younger users to navigate than some of the other sites I have found.

shmoop claims to "speak student."  I think this is a great site for kids who are trying to understand their topic of choice.  There are some primary source links embedded within the text of each subject.  The high interest topics of study makes this site usable for students doing research.

This search page can help you find all of the Smithsonian Institution's primary sources for your topic. Whether your topic is a culture, place or person, this search page with pull up photos, documents, paintings, and photographs of objects, such as jewelry, flags, musical instruments, tools, clothing, etc. Easy enough for even 3rd graders to use to find primary sources for research on historical sites, cultures, like Native Americans, & famous people.

This excellent site links the searcher to primary documents, images, etc. from libraries, archives, schools, and governments all over Europe, but everything is in English, usually with the native language included. The toolbox on the left helps, particularly special pages. This site is probably best used for researching cultures, history, and geography.

Ellis Island is an extremely important part of American History because our nation is founded on immigrants.  This site allows users to search the Ellis Island records for people who entered the country and discover more information about our own families.  Genealogy is something that isn't discussed much with students, but it is imperative for students to know our history.  Because we are a nation if immigrants, we all have relations to other countries and making that connection can be very important.  I would love to see high schoolers use this site to help investigate family origins.  Even if there were no connections to Ellis Island, they could choose from the list of more famous people to arrive.  The original documents that are captured on this site are a definite piece of our history that is worth investigating and sharing with others.

Scholastic.com is a gateway with an overabundance of activities for both teacher and student. Scholastic provides easy to navigate tabs for locating resources and tools, strategies and ideas, student activities, and books and authors by grade levels (Pre-K-12). The choices are filtered by grade, subject, and activities to effectively narrow down the user's search (i.e.), math, social studies, reading, sports, special education, language arts and animals. Once the user has selected the necessary discipline, they are able to use interactive and engaging web and whiteboard activities as well as a variety of lesson plans that are geared toward the 21st Century learner.

America's Story provides a great overview of American History in a simplified, easy-to-read manner.  The site is divided into five sections for easy navigation and to help users be able to identify what they need.  Students could use the See, Hear, and Sing section to understand the history of cartoons, children's songs, and various voice recordings.  The audio clips that are provided are directly from the Library of Congress and provide authentic learning experiences for students in second grade through 5th grade.

This is an interesting site that tries to present both sides of controversial issues. It uses journals, government documents, reports and other primary sources to present each side of the issue. Topics include education, health and medicine, politics, religion, sports, media and entertainment, money and business to name a few. This would be a great site for debate class, writing a persuasive speech, and use with current events.

Time For Kids is a great source of information for kids to keep up on current news stories.  They cover the US and around the world.  They feature kid reporters and have a homework helper section.

This site is a collection of songs from early American History, including the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and westward expansion after the war. This would be useful for a unit on any of those eras, especially for a music teacher, however it could be used by a classroom teacher or school librarian as well. I think listening to music from the past really helps students get a better feel for what it was like then. They may be able to picture that time and place in their mind a little clearer while listening to music they would have heard then.
