Xml sitemaps are an important part of any Search Engine Optimization strategy, but what might you do if you've a very large web site that you're trying to work on? Online google sitemap generators are likely to be limited to around 500 URLs and don't have the robust features that offline xml sitemap generators also provide. Your google sitemap should really include every singe page that you would like indexed, exactly why are you allowing yourself be limited? The initial step is to stop using free web-based tools and get an offline google sitemap generator that can handle more than 500 webpages.

Utilizing an offline generator doesn't completely get you out of the woods if you have a massive site. You will want to divide your xml sitemap into several files if it has more than 50,000 URLs. Why? Because Google limits each individual xml sitemap file to at the most 50,000 URLs (or 10MB, whichever comes first). Splitting your sitemap is fairly straight forward, be sure that each google sitemap file has a maximum of 50,000 pages (and that you do not have duplicate URLs the sitemaps between the two). Any time you split your xml sitemap file, name them so that each file has a specific name. I personally use "sitemap1.xml, sitemap2.xml, sitemap3.xml...", you get the idea. I use sitemap.xml (with a number) for the sitemap index.

Creating the google sitemap index file is also. The index file is pretty much just another XML file that contains the URL of each separate sitemap file within it. Details on the sitemap index format are available here:
    http://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html#index

If all this is over your head, do yourself a favor and get an offline xml sitemap generator that has the google sitemap index feature. I prefer the Inspyder generator because it will automatically split the google sitemap if it goes over 50,000 pages and create the sitemap index file for you. It'll do unlimited pages so there's no need to worry about outgrowing it. It it can do the FTP upload and pinging so once it's set up, it's on auto-pilot.

As I said before, google sitemaps are an essential piece of any Search-engine Optimisation approach. If you're struggling to work with free online tools, stop and think about buying an offline google sitemap generator. I think you will find that the investment makes sense in no time. I know it did for me.
