When Alex Yates, a marketing consultant, relocated two years ago to the Chicago area from San Diego he joined a running club. He had been a member of a track club in San Diego, and eyed the Chicago Area Runners Association, or CARA, as a way to integrate into his new community.

Small farms have been on the out for decades as younger generations leave town for urban lifestyles with more financial promise. But as we have seen recently in Michael Pollan's books (The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food) as well as the work of so many others, the tragic consequences of agribusiness have spurred a reactionary movement, which is now in full swing. The demand for sustainably produced and organic food is going up, and as a result of this increasing awareness, young people are moving back to the farm. And they're changing how it's done.

Less than half of Millennials, Americans age 18 to 29, believe when they are their parents' age, they will be better off, according to the "Survey of Young Americans' Attitudes Toward Politics and Public Service" (pdf) from Harvard University's Institute of Politics.

I first want to say how excited I am to be writing the personal finance blog for YPNation. Since I received the nod to write my first post I have been racking my brain for a good topic to begin with. Literally hundreds of ideas ran through my head and, needless to say, I will not be at a loss for topics down the road. But I have decided to start with some general thoughts on managing money--something many young people do not spend enough time thinking about.

With IRA's and 401(k)'s garnishing the most attention in the investment community, investors forget about the value offered from opening a good old-fashioned brokerage account. Most questions submitted by young professionals to the talking heads for leading money magazines and news channels deal with contributions to retirement accounts because that is what has been drilled into their psyche at an early age. Everyone hears "make sure you contribute to your 401(k) when you get that job" or "the tax breaks for contributing to an IRA are wonderful." And you know what, that advice is really good and I do recommend contributing as much as you can to your retirement accounts, but you need to diversify your investment accounts just like you diversify your investments in those accounts.

Over the years, life insurance has developed a stigma thanks to the stereotypical sleazy life insurance agent persona, not far removed from the used car salesman. And so it is one of those topics that doesn't get discussed very often these days, but should because it's an important component of a well-rounded financial plan.

We all know about the dangers and benefits of using social media in our personal lives and the importance of personal branding. But these outlets are equally as useful in the business world. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter are increasingly being used as marketing and publicity tools for companies. And when budgets are tight, using these sites can be a cost-effective solution to branding and marketing needs, especially for a young organization.

How do you, as young professionals, manage your household finances? Who is the saver and who is the spender? Do you fight over money? A 2008 survey by Parade Magazine found that money was the leading cause of marital fights. And rightly so. There was no class in high school or college titled, "How to manage money in a relationship." So when it comes to figuring out finances, it's literally trial by fire. And the fire can cause burns.

Okay, so more than 19 percent of Americans are underemployed-which means either unemployed or looking for full-time work. For the first time, Gallup has endeavored to discern how underemployed people feel about their situation. It's not surprising there are more discouraged people without jobs than there are hopeful people. Rather, it's in the survey's details where Gallup's findings become interesting.
