Leading up to tonight's panel discussion on the sustainability of our fiscal future, my co-panelists Ethan Pollack and Nicola Moore talked about what is a viable path. We all agree the United States is not on a sustainable fiscal path. If we continue down our current policy trajectory, debt will reach 100 percent of GDP in the early 2020s, 200 percent in the 2030s, and 800 percent by 2075.

Markets around the world have taken a few steps back in the past month, and there are a number of factors contributing to this newfound fear among investors. The debt crisis in Europe is, of course, the obvious event to point a finger at when explaining the recent market stall and decline. And a depressed Euro along with the Gulf oil spill are further adding to the instability. But there is one factor quietly lurking in the background that has been impacting the markets more than you might think.

This Wednesday, YPNation is hosting a panel discussion on the sustainability of our fiscal future; I will be one of the three speakers. My post today is a preview of my argument for how we should approach the topic of our fiscal future, and what our policy goals should be.

For my part, I'll be discussing the federal budget picture and what the government should-or should not-do to get it's fiscal house in order.
