This cover song "Directions" originally written by Nahko and Medicine for the People was performed live by Marlia project in May 2019 at the Collective Movement festival, Cyprus. Collective Movement is a three-day mind, body, spirit and entertainment event. Our love for nature and life brings us to our 3rd event. During this weekend you will be given the chance to meet the team at Collective Movement. Through our events we aim to develop our connection to nature and therefore have always opted for beautiful outdoor locations. This year we are hosting our event, on 17-19 May 2019, at Tris-Elies, an eco-village in the mountains of Cyprus. "Άσε τη ζωή να λιώνει μέσα στα χέρια της σαν χιόνι..." Cover song from Xylina Spathia [Στον Βράχο] by Marlia project OK so my performance at HUG - Hungarian Handpan & Worldmusic Gathering in Hungary 2019 was over and people wanted one more song. The stage manager said no. Szombathelyi Patrik from HUG stepped in and asked him to do one more song. Hernán Suárez Music was already on stage on calabash and percussion. Patrizio Castrovinci was already playing flute and hulusi with me in the previous song, along with Vértes Marcell who improvised on trumpet with us. I asked them to stick around on stage with me, although they had not heard the song ever before and this is result of our improvisation. Towards the end there is an impromptu moment when I decide to join the crowd off-stage and so you cannot hear the guitar & voice at this point because I took the cable out, finally leading to my return on stage and closing of the song and the performance. Today's Libra full moon is helping out with the official release of my new song "Palisandros" (meaning "Rosewood", one of the main kinds of tonal wood used in traditional instrument-making), which I have been procrastinating for some time now, because of how vulnerable and exposed it makes me feel in a lot of many different ways. First and foremost, singing in my native Cypriot dialect; this is the first song I have written in Cypriot. It brings tears to my eyes every single time. Partly I know why; partly I am waiting to explore.. Secondly, there is nothing fancy about this recording; yet the story is interesting: I conceived the melody 3 years ago while rehabilitating from a knee surgery and being hosted in Greece by my dear friend & exceptional guitarist Bill Stathopoulos, I wrote the lyrics while trying it on the piano of my brilliant songsister Arianna Tondo ヅ in Italy, I recorded it with special creature's Benjamin Hedengran Andersen classical guitar in a soundproofless hut in India, I used the chimes, rattles, cajon and djembe belonging to multi-talented musician and top-notch father David Esteban, while shooting the video in the wilderness of the Philippines with charismatic and tribal soulsister Dona Tumacder-Esteban, finally mixing and producing it in the company of my dogs in Cyprus. Lastly, I would like to dedicate this song to mother Earth and the four elements. And I would like this song to be a reminder to all of us: That no matter how tough people wish to look on the outside, remember there is a soft, tender and sensitive part somewhere deep inside them, that got trapped there for one reason or another. By all means, it wants to come out. If only we give it a chance, it wants to come out. And each one of us can help somebody else bring their trapped part out and breathe again anew. The idea of this cover song is to mix the traditional Bulgarian 5/8 song about Gyura who goes down to the river with the Medicine song by Rising Appalachia, which is actually a reggae-style song, "honoring the traditions of folk medicine; plant-based medicine as a tool for empowerment and healing. It is a call to action to support the voices of the herbalists, healers, and teachers… the roots, plants, trees, and stones… the arts, the spirits, and the wild ones. It is an honoring of all the many ways that we can be well, and the radical and traditional ways in which we can steward health within ourselves. This song is a direct tribute to the people around the world who are holding and teaching these ways of herbal plant-based medicine, educating us all to know our gardens, our forests, our plants and our own bodies... to bring wellness back into our own hands and communities. It is not a dismissal of modern medicine, but a gratitude and honoring of its ancestry and foundations within folkloric traditions. On 23rd December 2018, a group of friends & strangers, students & teachers, Europeans & Indians, got together for an experimental, sacred, high-energy JAMily concert at a vegan restaurant in Varanasi, India. This is an excerpt of our language of music! At minute 7, on a totally different context, I was inspired to lay down some vocals with lyrics from the Cypriot traditional song "Ela korou na doume ta mavra sou ta mathkia". The video includes our journey from the guesthouse to the venue with our instruments and our smiles, through holy Ganga river! Besides our Indian Classical Music studies with our masters during our stay in Varanasi that month, we were inspired to put forward a methodological tool, called THE ELEMENT KEY SYSTEM, which is essentially a sign language for musicians to use in order to conduct one another while improvising with music; and expanded to applications to life itself!
