Using 'Bacteria-Eaters' to Prevent Infections On Medical Implant Materials - 0 views

  •
They describe attachment of phages to the surfaces of materials like those used in implanted medical devices, and evidence that the phages remain active, killing E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Those bacteria cause the most common hospital-acquired infections.

Your Immune System 'Remembers' Microbes It's Never Fought Before, New Study Says - 0 views

  •
How do naive cells accomplish this microbial memory generation? It's all about the environment. People are constantly exposed to countless bacteria, fungi and viruses, everywhere all of the time. T cells might act like they're reacting to something they've seen before--maybe the bacteria's proteins look similar to that of a harmless bug, and the cell is fooled.

New Insights Into Ebola Infection Pave the Way for Much-Needed Therapies - 0 views

  •
Little research is available on how the Ebola virus buds from the plasma membrane of human cells, says senior study author Robert Stahelin of Indiana University School of Medicine. "By shedding light on this process, our study will help us to identify potential drug candidates that could interfere with this step in the viral life cycle.

Lucky Bacteria Strike It Rich During Formation of Treatment-Resistant Colonies: Researc... - 1 views

  •
Like pioneers in search of a better life, bacteria on a surface wander around and often organize into highly resilient communities, known as biofilms. It turns out that a lucky few bacteria become the elite cells that start the colonies, and they organize in a rich-get-richer pattern similar to the distribution of wealth in the US economy, according to a new study..

New Method Developed To Kill Pathogenic Bacteria Without Antiobiotics Or Chemicals - 0 views

  •
Researchers have developed a new method to eliminate deadly pathogenic bacteria in food products and packaging, without the need for antibiotics or chemicals. The method can kill various types of pathogenic bacteria, including Listeria, which is among most common cause of food-borne illness. The team of engineers managed to successfully attach cell lytic enzymes to silica nano particles, which are entirely safe to be used with food products, and created a coating that could selectively kill Listeria, when it gets contact with the bacteria, without affecting other chemicals or bacteria present. The process takes few mins and can tackle listeria even in high concentration. The lytic enzymes could be attached to starch nanoparticles that are typically used for food packaging.

Researchers Find Immunity Protein That Ramps Up Inflammation, and Agents That Can Block It - 0 views

  •
Scientist have a found innate protein that increases inflammation and, agents that block it, resulting in increased in survival and improved lung function in animal models pneumonia. "The F-box protein Fbxo3, and other related proteins, represent ideal targets for treatment of acute lung injury, because it controls the innate immune response, is upstream of important inflammatory signaling pathways, and is more selective than traditional drugs that regulate protein turnover" noted Mark T Gladwin M.D., chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, Pitt School of Medicine.

Estrogen Plus Progestin Use Linked With Increased Breast Cancer Incidence and Mortality - 1 views

  •
Estrogen plus progestin use is linked with increased breast cancer incidence. In addition, prognosis is similar for both users and nonusers of combined hormone therapy, suggesting that mortality from breast cancer may be higher for hormone therapy users as well, according to a study

Cell Therapy Promising for Acute Type of Leukemia - 0 views

  •
Exciting experimental treatment that stops cancer cells. The treatment uses the patient's own T-cells(disease fighting cells) and uses some sort of virus as a vector to change those cells into cancer fighting cells. My concern was was is there a damage done to other immune systems cells that also have the CD19 molecule on their surface? dendritic cells to name, which is mandatory for the body to fight both bacterial as well as viral infections. You wipe the dendritic cells and that introduces opportunistic infections. Regardless amazing news.
