    This is the tool used to moderate questions during Obama's campaign. It is also used to some extent in the Stanford AI course. This tool allows the community to moderate the questions that it thinks are most important to answer. In the case of Stanford AI, the highest rated questions receive video responses by the faculty.

    When something sounds too good to be true, you check it out. So Jeana Murphy and Henry Jordan did some sleuthing when their employer, Walmart, offered to pick up part of the tab for degrees from an online university that offers flexible hours, relatively cheap tuition and college credit for on-the-job training and experience. Murphy, a 30-year-old assistant manager at a Walmart store in Elkin, N.C., started by Googling the American Public University System, the for-profit institution that two years ago landed a highly sought partnership as the preferred educational provider for the more than 1.3 million U.S. employees of Walmart Stores, Inc.

    The way to think about the iPhone in relation to higher ed is less as a single product but a new product category. This category, which includes Android/Google and maybe eventually the Windows 8 phones, equals smart phone plus an app ecosystem. The carriers (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc.) remain a critical (as they own the cellular network), but annoying component of this ecosystem. Annoying because their voice/data pricing plans are only getting more expensive, restrictive and confusing as the hardware and software on smartphones improves exponentially each year. Any impact that the iPhone and its cousins achieve in higher ed will be in spite of, rather than because, the big cellular companies that we all must endure.     "If they're naive at Googling, it's because the ability to judge information is almost never taught in school. Under 2001's No Child Left Behind Act, elementary and high schools focus on prepping their pupils for reading and math exams. And by the time kids get to college, professors assume they already have this skill. The buck stops nowhere. This situation is surpassingly ironic, because not only is intelligent search a key to everyday problem-solving, it also offers a golden opportunity to train kids in critical thinking."

  • App Inventor is an open-source tool that democratizes app creation for and by all. By combining visual LEGO-like blocks together on the screen, even users with no prior programming experience can use App Inventor to create their own mobile applications. Currently, App Inventor has over 1,000,000 users and is being taught by universities, schools, and community centers worldwide. In those initiatives, students not only acquire important technology skills such as computer programming, but also have the opportunity to apply computational thinking concepts to many fields including science, health, education, business, social action, entertainment, and the arts. Work on App Inventor was initiated in Google Research by Hal Abelson and is continuing at the MIT Media Lab as part of its Center for Mobile Learning, a collaboration with the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Scheller Teacher Education Program (STEP).

  • Build-in-Progress is a new platform for people to document and share design projects that are still works-in-progress. The website encourages designers to share their designs as they are under development, showcasing the trials and errors that naturally occur throughout the design process. This is in contrast to existing platforms, which tend to present users with edited recipes for replicating existing projects. Build-in-Progress also has a companion mobile app for enabling designers to easily share media associated with their projects.
