MORE WEALTH AMONG 1.5 billion people in India is driving a surge in new travelers with increased disposable income, creating significant demand for hotel rooms across the subcontinent, according to HotStats. This demand spans all asset classes, making it both easier and more challenging for developers and operators to determine what to build and operate. HotStats' latest blog reveals that India's hospitality sector is poised for growth due to its expanding economy, population and market performance. "India mirrors China's growth from 20 years ago, but a key difference emerged when India recently surpassed China as the world's most populous nation," wrote Tareq Bagaeen, HotStats' senior consultant. "While China's population is set to drop below one billion in the coming decades, India will continue growing, reaching 1.7 billion in 30 years. With a growing economy and strong market performance, India's hospitality sector is primed for growth."

FLEXIBLE SUPPLIER CONTRACTS and cost-effective cloud solutions provide homegrown mid-segment hotel brands in India a competitive edge over international counterparts, according to a recent study by Hotelogix, a cloud-based hospitality technology provider. The paper notes that Indian brands understand local culture and traditions better than international ones. Hotelogix's whitepaper, The Rise and Rise of India's Home-grown Mid-segment Hotel Brands, revealed that domestic mid-segment brands control about 60 percent of India's total branded rooms. These brands are leveraging management contracts and franchise models as growth strategies, gaining an edge over international chains. Also, homegrown brands with smaller inventories can expand rapidly in cities with populations between 10,000 and 99,999, where 80 to 85 percent of demand is domestic, making it difficult for international brands to establish operations.

The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh eyes investments of more than $3.9 billion (Rs 32,000 crore) in the hospitality and tourism sector, according to a report published in Business Standard. The investment could create an additional 80,000 accommodation units through hotels and resorts, addressing the room availability deficit. Religious tourism surged post the consecration of the Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya on Jan. 22. Uttar Pradesh anticipates an annual tourist footfall of 850 million by 2028, emphasizing the expansion of hospitality units in tourism hubs like Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Agra, Business Standard daily reported. "To cater to this increasing demand, the state is looking to create a robust supply of accommodation units with the development of hotels, resorts, and homestays," a government official was quoted as saying in the report.

SOUTH INDIAN CITY Hyderabad topped the list of most-booked cities in India for 2024, according to a recent study by OYO. Religious tourism remains strong, with Puri, Varanasi, and Haridwar as key spiritual destinations, drawing large numbers of pilgrims. OYO's annual "Travelopedia 2024" report analyzes travel trends using its booking data. "2024 has marked a year of transformation in global travel," said Shreerang Godbole, OYO's global chief service officer. "Travellers are embracing flexibility, whether for business or leisure. Remote work trends are driving demand for both quick getaways and long stays." Hyderabad led bookings, with growth in both leisure and business travel, followed by Bengaluru, Delhi, and Kolkata, the study found. Uttar Pradesh remains India's top travel state, with Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka also showing strong booking volumes. Smaller towns like Patna, Rajahmundry, and Hubli saw up to 48 percent year-on-year booking growth, indicating rising interest in non-metro destinations.

Cochin International Airport (CIAL) is the first greenfield airport in India to be built under a public private partnership (PPP). The airport is located at Nedumbassery, 25km north-east of Cochin, in the state of Kerala. A new international terminal building is being constructed at the airport by Larsen & Toubro to meet growing international passenger demands.
