WITH DISNEYWORLD AND Universal Studios as a backdrop, the AAHOA Convention & Trade Show 2024 got under way in Orlando, Florida, Tuesday. AT THE 35TH Hunter Hotel Investment Conference, there was plenty to talk about. Several Indian American hoteliers were speakers at the event at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta March 19 to 22. HENRY COUNTY, GEORGIA, Police Officer Paramhans Desai gave his life in the line of duty. In his case, he continued giving even after his death. Desai was an organ donor, but his legacy will go beyond even that act of generosity, thanks to Samaj Saves Lives, a volunteer group dedicated to promoting organ donation nationwide. Jayantilal "Jerry" Patel, a Samaj Saves Lives Ambassador and Mississippi-based hotelier, spoke at the officer's funeral along with the deceased's sister Divya Desai. "I offered Divya, since he was an organ donor, that I would put up the billboards in the Atlanta metro area, to help the cause," Jerry said. "The GoFundMe page [set up for the family,] I think it's closed today at $345,000. That's a lot of money." The GoFundMe campaign has closed, and the money will go to Desai's family. The billboards, which Patel arranged as donation from Nick Brown with Lamar Outdoor Advertising of Atlanta, are in Rome and Cartersville, Georgia, and refer viewers to the Donate Life America website.

EV HOTEL CORP., the Atlanta-based tech centric "smart hotel" company, is in a "change of control" stock purchase agreement with Plandai Biotechnology, Inc. Plandai will become the parent company to EV Hotel, founded by Ken Patel, for the purposes of going public. Before closing the agreement, both parties must complete independent financial audits, a third-party valuation of EV Hotel Corp. and the company completing corporate actions with the Secretary of State of Nevada, according to EV Hotel. Trading regulatory organization FINRA will change Plandai's name and trading symbol, along with implementing a reverse split of the company's common stock, with management plans at 100:1. Upon closing, Plandai will acquire all of the authorized stock and assets in EV Hotel in exchange for common stock and Patel will acquire all of the company's Series "A" Preferred stock, resulting in a change of control.

A BALLOT MEASURE in Los Angeles that would have required hotels in the city to house the homeless along with paying guests has been officially withdrawn from consideration. However, the Los Angeles City Council also passed an ordinance to replace the ballot measure that some local hoteliers also protest its passage. The ballot measure, sponsored by Unite Here Local 11 hospitality workers union, would have required hotels to house homeless voucher holders with regular guests, spurring protests by AAHOA, the American Hotel & Lodging Association and others. Last week, Unite Here agreed to withdraw that ballot measure, which was going to go before voters in March. Also last week, the council approved the Responsible Hotel Ordinance to replace the ballot measure and that would allow hotels to voluntarily make vacant rooms available for interim housing for the homeless. It also would require developers of new hotel properties to obtain a conditional use permit through a public review of the proposed development's impact on the existing housing supply and to replace any housing that would be demolished or otherwise lost in the neighborhood.

OWNERS OF ECONOMY brand hotels may not always think about improving the appeal of their properties, and up until now their options for interior design have been limited. Alpa Patel discovered those limitations and four years ago it inspired her to do something about it. She has created a company, Spaceez, that offers affordable design work to those owners to give them the option of upgrading their hotels into boutiques, allowing them to charge higher rates accordingly. Her inspiration comes from her efforts to help improve her parents' Super 8 hotel where she grew up in Arlington, Texas. "My dad was going to refresh the property because he hadn't touched it in a decade. I said Dad, do something nice with the lobby. He was just going to do the rooms," Patel said. "The lobbies, it's a public space and people come if it looks nice photographs, nice. You could charge higher rates."
