A GROUP OF InterContinental Hotels Group franchisees have filed a lawsuit against the company in connection with a cyber-attack that "significantly disrupted" its booking channels and other applications in mid-September. The lawsuit claims that IHG should have taken more steps to prevent the breach in light of warnings it received after a previous breach. IHG implemented a response plan, including notifying the relevant regulatory authorities, working with its technology suppliers and engaging external specialists to investigate the incident, according to the company. The breach affected IHG's reservations and customer care call centers, as well as internal systems, such as Merlin and the IHG Help Desk, according to a statement from AAHOA on the breach. The association said franchisees, including some of its members, saw a complete shutdown in guestroom bookings during this outage. On Sept. 15, several IHG franchisees filed a lawsuit against IHG in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia Atlanta Division alleging the company should have done more to prevent the breach. The lawsuit references a similar breach the company experienced in 2017 as an example that IHG should have taken further steps to secure its system.

STAFF MEMBERS OF two hotel industry associations donned blue in January to recognize National Human Trafficking Prevention month. AAHOA and the American Hotel & Lodging Association also sought to encourage hotel owners to take advantage of their educational programs on detecting and preventing trafficking in their properties. Like his predecessors since 2010, President Joe Biden issued a proclamation officially designating January as the month to focus awareness on trafficking prevention, according to the U.S. Department of State. The month recognizes the work done by foreign governments, international organizations, anti-trafficking entities, law enforcement officials, survivor advocates, communities of faith, businesses and private citizens to raise awareness about human trafficking, the State Department said. "Since human trafficking disproportionately impacts racial and ethnic minorities, women and girls, LGBTQI+ individuals, vulnerable migrants, and other historically marginalized and underserved communities, our mission to combat human trafficking must always be connected to our broader efforts to advance equity and justice across our society," Biden said in his proclamation.

HIHOTELS BY HOSPITALITY International has entered into a partnership with the travel app Hopper. With this new partnership, Hopper will have a direct connection with hihotels' five brands namely Scottish Inns, Red Carpet Inn, Master Hosts Inns, Downtowner Inns and Passport Inn. These brands will gain access to Hopper's proprietary suite of fintech products that assist with conversion, repeat purchases and profitability, hihotels' said in a statement. According to the statement, Hopper will help hihotels expand its growing online presence, while retaining its customer base. "This strategic alliance with Hopper is yet another way of providing more revenue opportunities and increased exposure for our franchisees," said Gary Gobin, director of operations at hihotels'. "Hopper, previously known for its flights business, has rapidly expanded into hotels, homes and rental cars in recent years - with hotels currently comprising more than half of the company's travel bookings. TWO-THIRDS OF U.S. travelers think that family and friend reunions bring the most joyful summer vacations, according to a survey from G6 Hospitality's Motel 6. The survey, conducted by SWNS Media Group, revealed that 57 percent of the respondents plan to attend a family or friend reunion this summer. The poll conducted May 20 to 26, also found 2,000 adults traveling this summer said that an average respondent has not gathered with extended family in four years. U.S. travelers will journey nearly 80 miles to reunite with their favorite people and places, while about 32 percent will venture more than 100 miles. More than half of those surveyed believe that reunions will look and feel different this year. The reunion invitee lists include friends (42 percent), significant others (39 percent), neighbors (34 percent) and pets (36 percent). According to the survey, 55 percent of those attending a family reunion this year look forward to celebrating both old traditions while creating new ones, and 64 percent are interested in becoming more connected to their family traditions.

RED ROOF HAS settled a lawsuit that alleged employees at Red Roof properties near Atlanta knew about and participated in human trafficking in those hotels. The lawsuit included a hotel owned by Asian American led Varahi Hotels LLC. Four female plaintiffs, identified only as Jane Does 1 to 4, filed the lawsuit in 2019 in connection to the alleged trafficking of which they were victims. The hotel properties were in the Buckhead area of Atlanta and the community of Smyrna. The lawsuit alleged that Red Roof and Varahi violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and failed to keep the hotels safe and secure. Red Roof's defense that it was not responsible for the actions of the traffickers was not sufficient, the suit said.

NETHERLANDS-BASED CITIZENM HAS inaugurated its first hotel at Meta's Menlo Park campus in California, marking its second U.S. opening this year after the launch of citizenM Miami Center. CitizenM currently operates 14 hotels in the U.S. and has plans for additional openings in 2024, including locations in Austin, Boston, and another in South Beach, Miami. The global hospitality company was founded by Rattan Chadha in 2015. The five-story hotel, spanning 79,400 square feet, features 240 modular rooms, citizenM said. The brand's modular design has not only reduced construction waste by up to 60 percent but has also shortened the development timeline by three to four months compared to traditional construction methods. The hotel at Meta's Frank Gehry-designed headquarters campus has been designed by citizenM's architectural partner, Baskervill. URBAN PARK HOTEL Collection, an independent budget-conscious hotel group, has partnered with technology firm LodgeTender to integrate its latest hotel technology platform. The new technology offers hotel owners an extra revenue stream, while eliminating the need to pay for a hotel PMS, booking engine, and channel manager, Urban Park Hotel said in a statement. THE AMERICAN HOTEL & Lodging Association has accepted ClubCorp, an owner and operator of private clubs, as a new member, a statement said. The association hopes to attract more clubs with lodging connections. Ron Vlasic, executive vice president of Operations City & Stadium Clubs, ClubCorp, is a member of AHLA's board and former chair of the board. He will remain on AHLA's Board as an individual representative starting June 2022. Founded in 1957, ClubCorp has more than 200 golf and country clubs, city clubs and stadium clubs in 30 states, the District of Columbia, and two foreign countries. It provides services to members and guests.

A STRONGER THAN expected performance by U.S. hotels in the fourth quarter of 2021 led CBRE Hotels Research to upgrade its forecast for the rest of 2022. CBRE now forecasts RevPAR will reach 2019 nominal levels by the third quarter of this year, one year earlier than the previous forecast. Occupancy is expected to rise 6.7 percent to 61.3 percent this year, then rise 5.2 percent to 64.4 percent in 2023. ADR is forecast to rise 10.1 percent to $133.94 in 2022 and go up 6 percent more to $141.99 in 2023. CBRE expects RevPAR to rise 17.5 percent in 2022 overall to $82.04 and then rise 11.5 percent to $91.46 in 2023. Positive trends, such as high employment and the return to the office for many workers who had been working from home contributed to the revised forecast, CBRE said. Other factors contributing to the improvement include below-average supply growth, strong domestic leisure trends, the resumption of inbound international travel and a predicted return to office later this year. AN ALABAMA HOTELIER, Pravin Raojibhai Patel, was shot and killed last week after a confrontation with a man asking for a room, according to the Sheffield, Alabama, Police Department. William Jeremy Moore, 34, was arrested in connection with the incident, which comes three years after a series of similar killings of Indian American Hotel owners. Patel, 76, was the owner of the Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield. On Feb. 8, Moore came to the motel and tried to get a room when an altercation started between the two men. "That is when Mr. Moore pulled a handgun and shot Mr. Patel," Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry said in the report. "Mr. Moore was quickly apprehended by Sheffield Police on 13th Avenue when he was trying to break into an abandoned house. When searching Mr. Moore, the murder weapon was found in his possession." Jemeriz Owens, who works as a barber across the street from Patel's motel, told a local news station that he heard three gunshots go off back-to-back. He ran to the motel and found police attending to Patel, who was dead outside his office.

PRAVIN RAOJIBHAI PATEL, Alabama hotelier who was gunned down Feb. 8 after an altercation at his hotel, is being remembered by leaders at AAHOA as a family man and a good businessman. AAHOA also is condemning the killing as a senseless act of violence. Peachtree Group recently acquired the 180-room Hilton Garden Inn Denver Tech Center in Denver, marking its second hotel in Denver after the Element Denver Park Meadows. The company's hospitality management team will oversee the seven-story hotel located in the city's employment hub, Peachtree said in a statement. However, the financial terms of the transactions were not disclosed. OKLAHOMA CITY HOTELIER Hemant Shantilal Mistry died on June 23 following an assault in his motel parking lot the previous night. Richard Lewis, 41, was arrested in connection with the attack in which police say he punched Mistry, who died from the impact. Mistry, 59, an AAHOA member, is the second Indo American hotelier this year to die from on-duty violence following the murder of Pravin R. Patel, owner of the Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield, Alabama, in February. A video of the assault has gone viral on social media, showing Mistry in a white t-shirt arguing with Lewis in a sky blue t-shirt. The argument escalates, culminating in Lewis punching Mistry in the face. Mistry collapses as Lewis walks away. Police found Mistry unconscious around 10:00 pm and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he died at 7:40 pm the following day from his injuries, according to a police report.
