Water | Free Full-Text | Legionella spp. Colonization in Water Systems of Hotels Linked... - 0 views

  •
"The present study found that approximately 63% of the hotels which were inspected following a Legionnaires' disease case notification were found to be colonized with Legionella spp. The study also evaluated the significant factors that contribute to the maintenance, management and disinfection of water distribution systems, including the successful implementation of WSPs to improve hotel water supply and sanitation systems. Chemical treatment and the monitoring of drinking water quality, including chlorine disinfection, pH adjustment, and water temperature control of hot water systems are recommended as control measures in water safety plans, in conjunction with other procedures. It has also been found that antiquated hotel buildings are at increased risk in terms of the safety and quality of the water in their distribution systems. To conclude, risk assessment, environmental monitoring and disinfection of water systems, as well as the implementation of preventive control measures (WSPs) are the key elements for preventing contamination by pathogenic microorganisms in large public and private water distribution systems."

Leaving avoidance manoeuvres to the car reduces the risk of an accident | Lund University - 0 views

  •
This research is not focused on autonomy but on driver aides. This started with 'lane departure warning', which now also includes in some implementations a correction nudge. This work is focused on sudden avoidance manoeuvres by detecting the object and the direction it is travelling. "We can numerically determine what the optimal manoeuvre is and then decide which control principle is the best." Significant improvement in surviving accidents that would often be fatal - 233 run-off lane accidents were analyzed that ended in fatalities or very serious injury, and the team concluded that 80% were avoidable with an autonomous system.

The Problem with Automation: Humans vs. Machines | Business Aviation News: Aviation Int... - 0 views

  •
Mastering automation is a foundational skill required to safely operate any modern state-of-the-art aircraft. Under normal circumstances, automation reduces workload, creates efficiencies, and, to a fault, is highly dependable. On rare occasions, these highly reliable systems present pilots with an unexpected, obscure, or highly complex scenario that if mismanaged may quickly deteriorate and jeopardize the safety of flight. The article focuses on situations to where the human was unable to work with or override an autonomous system, resulting in lost of craft and life. This is a situation that will continue to rise in significance as we transition to more autonomy in our lives. We must understand the machines as we understand ourselves and others involved in our lives.

Kodiak Robotics Unveils Its Next-Generation Autonomous Truck with Plans to More than Do... - 0 views

  •
Kodiak's fourth-generation truck features a modular and discreet sensor suite in just three locations: a slim profile "center pod" on the front roofline of the truck, and pods integrated into both of the side mirrors. This well-integrated and low profile sensor placement vastly simplifies sensor installation and maintenance, and increases safety. The new generation of Kodiak self-driving trucks will improve the robustness of the autonomous system. It was designed with greater fleet uptime, manufacturing, and serviceability in mind--all of which are critical to scale quickly, safely and efficiently.

Future Frontiers in Corrosion Science and Engineering, Part III: The Next "Leap Ahead" ... - 0 views

  •
Indeed, the era of big data and data analytics has arrived and is already underway in many places (medicine, materials, and elsewhere).16-19 Schools of data science have emerged at many universities.20 Past knowledge and existing data allow us to use algorithms in order to attempt to recognize patterns identifying future corrosion performance. The hope is that these approaches are helpful for predicting not only corrosion performance but failures, too.4 Such approaches are logical as long as existing data cover a wide range of possibilities and there are no required extrapolations into sparsely populated data spaces.

Sustainability | Special Issue : Materials and Corrosion - 0 views

  •
"Corrosion has a huge economic, environmental and sustainability impact on virtually all facets of constructional materials, from highways, bridges, and buildings to oil and gas, chemical processing, desalination, nuclear, power facilities, water, and wastewater systems. In addition to causing severe environmental damage and threats to public safety, corrosion disrupts operations and requires extensive repair and replacement of failed assets. The annual cost of corrosion worldwide was estimated to exceed $U.S.2.5 trillion in 2016, which translates to 3 to 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of industrialized countries according to NACE IMPACT study report. (...) To reduce the huge cost and the environmental impact of corrosion and enhance the sustainability of materials used for construction, available corrosion control practices such as proper material design and selection, the use of corrosion inhibitors, coatings, cathodic protection etc., are recommended and could lead to savings of between 15 and 35% of the cost of corrosion. This translates to between US$375 and $875 billion annually"
