This article talks about swearing and the hidden benefits that come with it. It also talks a little bit about swearing in different languages and how what words are considered swear words evolved. One thing I found particularly interesting in the article is that swearing has an observable, physical effect on a person. In the article, it said that "Students who repeated a curse word were able to keep their hand in a bucket of ice water longer than those who uttered a neutral word." I think that's both crazy and amazing that repeating a word that's considered taboo can have a physical impact on one's body.

This article focused on the impacts that technology has had on the writing for younger generations. The style of writing that is used for social media has become known as "Netspeak" and typically consists of shorter sentences and phrases, as well as shortening of words through abbreviations or substitutions. ie. lol for laughing out loud, or w8 for weight. These came about as ways to fit the short character limits set by many sites, however this style of writing has been observed to start affecting other more formal forms of writing. Although this is something that some people have become aware of, there are still many people who do this without thinking, and don't realize that they have started to use netspeak in writing for papers

This article reminded me of the TedTalk we watched with Lindsay Morcom because it talked about how in Russian, they describe different shades of blue in different words just like how in Indigenous language, they do the same. The article talks about how languages can change your perception of the world.

This article is about how our native language affects what we notice in our surroundings. It features the "Russian blues" theory that Russians, since they have two separate words for blue, can define blues quicker and with more accuracy than native english speakers.
