Actually (and respectfully) that's a pretty bad list of Wordpress plugins. Some of those are horrible plugins, like No Ping Wait, and Ultimate Tag Warrior - neither of which are needed anymore. Many of the rest while 'helpful' are far from essential. The screenshot appears to be of WP 2.5 or 2.6 even though the blog post is Jan 2009 which would have been 2.7+.
I've been using (and blogging) Wordpress for many years, this is my list of Essential plugins is as follows:
cForms II All in One SEO Pack Wordpress.com Stats WP-Postviews Aizatto's Related Posts Angsuman's Translator Breadcrumb Google XML Sitemaps Feedburner Feedsmith WP Page Numbers Subscribe to Comments Drainhole Multi-Page Toolkit AskApache Google 404 Comment Luv
Every one of those plugins are very essential and have a specific purpose. Please don't see it as spam, but I always make my used plugin list available on my blog and list it in my sidebar so other's can see what I use on a regular basis: http://www.jtpratt.com/wordpress-plugins-used/

I've been a professional webmaster creating web sites for the last 13 years. I blog full time about music, SEO, Wordpress, affiliate stores, eBay Partner Network, niche stores and sites, themes, plugins, monetization, and more...
