Menstrual periods are very easy and convenient for some women. The periods that are regular, starting and stopping at nearly the same date every month will cause very little or no problems for such women. But for others, the periods may lead to a variety of physical or emotional distresses. These problems include very heavy or very little bleeding, missed periods or emotional stress and anxiety in a few women.

An irregular menstrual cycle disorder may involve one or more of the above mentioned problems These may include very heavy menstrual bleeding known as menorrhagia, no menstrual bleeding known as amenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding, bleeding in between periods called Metrorrhagia, dysmenorrhea: painful menstrual periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

According to Mahendra Trivedi and Trivedi Masters™, many women have to deal every month with menstruation cycle problems. These problems are related with the physiology of women. A brief discussion of all the above menstrual disorders is as follows.

Heavy menstrual bleeding is one of the most common types of abnormal menstrual cycles. Menstrual bleeding may be considered abnormally heavy if you may need to change pads or tampons every hour or less than that.

Amenorrhea is the opposite of heavy menstrual bleeding i.e. no menstrual periods for a considerable period. The condition is generally normal before puberty or at the time of menopause or during pregnancy. If the problem occurs out of these three situations then, you might need a doctor's advice.

Amenorrhea could be primary or secondary. If women do not start menstruating even after 16, primary amenorrhea is diagnosed. It usually results from abnormalities in the endocrine system, which regulates the hormones. The hypothalamus or genetic abnormalities may also cause this problem. In Secondary amenorrhea periods suddenly stop for three months or more. This may be due to problems that disturb estrogen levels like excessive physical strain, stress, etc.

Most women have experienced menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea with their periods at some point in their lives. If these cramps are extremely painful and persist, the condition is referred to as dysmenorrhea and requires medical consultation. Such pain may be triggered by prostaglandins, produced by the uterine lining cells. Severe menstrual pain may also cause some diarrhea or an occasional feeling of faintness.

Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is commonly used term to describe a range of psychological or physical symptoms related to the menstrual cycle that affect about 40% women. PMS disturb the women's lifestyle as the symptoms are more troublesome and severe as compared to normal menstrual troubles. Most common emotional symptoms are depression, anger, anxiety, mood swings, and physical symptoms include swollen and painful breasts, headaches and fatigue.

Rising and falling levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone may be a major cause of PMS. This influences serotonin (brain chemical) levels that have a strong effect on mood.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD is far more troublesome than the typical PMS. About 3 to 8 percent women experience PMDD related symptoms.

The most common symptoms of PMDD are heightened anxiety; mood swings resulting in irritability, Women with major depression history, mood disorders are more susceptible. Both emotional and physical PMDD-related symptoms are cyclical. The symptoms generally clash with the beginning of periods. Some women may continue with the depression phase in case her PMDD is left untreated. She may delve into a major depression, and this may get fatal in some cases. Hence, psychiatric help is suggested in major cases of PMDD.

Health experts suggest women not to ignore any period related troubles and get due treatment if required. There are many wellness programs and special retreats for women based on the phenomenon of the Trivedi Effect®.
