Animation of Falling Cat and Conservation of Angular Momentum - 0 views

  •
This is a great explanation of why they always land on their feet. Since we can't bring in live cats to demo this, what could we do? Perhaps we could get students to record them doing this at home with their cats and have them offer an explanation. They could slow the video and draw lines through the axis of rotation and study it more closely in class.
  •
One more great animation with a vector explanation as well. This one pulls in additional concepts that students should understand.

Socks Before Shoes: Unraveling Cell Division - 0 views

  • Just as you make sure your socks are on before your shoes, cells make sure that their chromosomes are properly aligned before they divide. However, every time a cell divides, it runs the risk of generating cells with too few or too many chromosomes. These mistakes can cause Down Syndrome and play a role in the growth of cancers. In his Science Center Lecture Series presentation, professor Andrew Murray looks at a mysterious cellular process that may provide clues to understanding chromosomal abnormalities such as the higher incidence of children with Down Syndrome born to older women.
  •
Great lecture on how cell division works-specifically chromosomes are aligned before the cells divide.  Video is nicely broken up into parts.

Hunting Endangered Species - Marginal Revolution - 0 views

  •
I was surprised to discover, however, that "some exotic animal species that are endangered in Africa are thriving on ranches in Texas, where a limited number are hunted for a high price." Texas hunters have saved several endangered African species, unfortunately for the animals, the story does not end happily. Video from 60 Minutes below-some excellent material on incentives, ethics and conservation for classroom discussion.

Soci History, sociology and other studies of science are great windows into the nature of science. They both motivate students and help them interpret the science they encounter in public policy and personal decision-making. How does one begin?

Controversy at the water's edge | R&D Mag - 0 views

  • Tahei Tahara and colleagues from the RIKEN Advanced Science Institute in Wako, in collaboration with researchers in Japan and Europe, have uncovered the presence of strongly bonded water pairs at the air–water interface, rather than previously hypothesized ‘ice-like’ surface structures.
  •
interesting study and imaging of water molecules at the air-water surface.

A visit to Harvard and Exeter: problem solving done right « Granted, but… - 0 views

  • BTW: Mazur also noted in our conversation that his years of experience on the Physics AP design committee made him less than enthusiastic about AP’s. He has data showing that student who got 5s on the Physics AP do worse than other Harvard Physics students who did not take the AP’s – a sobering thought.

Very interesting.  BTW: Mazur also noted in our conversation that his years of experience on the Physics AP design committee made him less than enthusiastic about AP's. Studying the Diving Reflex in the Laboratory > Innovative Uses > Vernier Software & Tec... - 0 views

  •
A much smaller version of the diving reflex occurs in humans and is easy to demonstrate in the lab using a few Vernier sensors, a large bowl of cold water, or a cold pack on the face. When cold water (10°C or less) contacts the face, the diving reflex is elicited. Breathing is inhibited and heart rate decreases. This response is not observed during normal breath holding in air or when the face is placed in warm water. Heart rate will actually increase in these two conditions.
