One of the most essential elements of the principalship is the expectation that the principal will serve as the instructional leader of a learning organization. It's a challenge for any principal to find the ideal balance between leader and manager - let alone seize the opportunity to develop as a true instructional leader in a 21st century school. But that's the job today.

Oftentimes these "professional growth plans" are scribbled out in 15 minute meetings with your principal, then "revisited" at the end of the year as a kind of autopsy. What would happen if we flipped this model on its head? What if instead we created a teacher-centered, always-on, and social approach to teacher improvement? One that connected them with dynamic resources and human communities that modeled new thinking and possibility, and that crucially built on their strengths?

Being a lead teacher is a big responsibility and it is important to work out a 'job description' with your principal. You need to know exactly what is expected of you. A lot of lead teachers find they become over loaded with work auditing, upgrading, maintaining etc the school ICT infrastructure. You may enjoy taking on this responsibility it is just a good idea to understand the expectations of the role in the first place.
