This looks like a great resource for teaching movie making to elementary students: "Check out the Me and My Movie feature on Children's BBC. This interactive site offers the amateur filmmaker in your classroom all kinds of videos and written instructions-plotting advice, camera techniques, lighting, etc. Trying all these short tutorials together is the Movie-Making Guide, which helps the student to plan out the entire process" (from Instructify)

TeachPaperless: Response to a Criticism about Using Twitter in the Classroom - 0 views

  •
Social Media is not a monolith. It doesn't tell you what to do. There are no rules. There are countless ways to use Twitter; the key is that the use of the social media needs to be fully integrated into the teaching -- specifically for the purpose of teaching the content and skills of the course. So, the trick is to figure out how to do that for your course. And there's a good chance that a PLN model isn't gonna work for your kids. As for WHY it's important for kids to take part in authentic social media (rather than the walled garden variety), I wrote a post yesterday where I tried to sort of lay out the framework of what we're looking at on the future grid of 21st century education. It's my attempt to argue what authenticity in education means now and for the future, and I'd welcome any criticism of it. Anyway, Social Media is what you make it. It's yours to tinker with. So, use your imagination.

"Type: Persuasive/Argument Essay What's the point?: Here's a quick look at what persuasive/argument essays try to accomplish. No man is an island. Some people may have islands, but no one, strictly speaking, is an island. Anyway, the point is that we don't live in isolation. Sometimes you need to convince people to do things-to lend their island to you, for example-and for that, you'll need some seriously adept persuasive skills. That's what the persuasive essay is all about. It informs, convinces, explores, and moves a person to action. For example: "Do your homework or you don't get to go out this weekend." Some classic persuasion right there. "

Story Map - ReadWriteThink - 0 views

  •
"The Story Map interactive includes a set of graphic organizers designed to assist teachers and students in prewriting and postreading activities. The organizers are intended to focus on the key elements of character, setting, conflict, and resolution development. Students can develop multiple characters, for example, in preparation for writing their own fiction, or they may reflect on and further develop characters from stories they have read. After completing individual sections or the entire organizer, students have the ability to print out their final versions for feedback and assessment. The versatility of this tool allows it to be used in multiple contexts."

A Thin Line : www.athinline.org - 1 views

from the site: "The Web and cell phones help us communicate, connect and learn in ways we never could before, but they've also forever changed how we interact with others. Things we used to share in person - and in private - can now be broadcast to thousands, instantly. Sometimes we type things we would never say to someone's face. As a result, new issues like forced sexting, textual harassment and cyberbullyiing have emerged, which now affect a majority of young people in the U.S. MTV's A Thin Line campaign was developed to empower you to identify, respond to, and stop the spread of digital abuse in your life and amongst your peers. The campaign is built on the understanding that there's a "thin line" between what may begin as a harmless joke and something that could end up having a serious impact on you or someone else. We know no generation has ever had to deal with this, so we want to partner with you to help figure it out. On-air, online and on your cell, we hope to spark a conversation and deliver information that helps you draw your own digital line." Includes fact sheets about topics such as sexting, digital spying, and excessive text messaging and instant messaging.

The Story of Stuff - 2 views

  •
"The Film The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute film that takes viewers on a provocative and eye-opening tour of the real costs of our consumer driven culture-from resource extraction to iPod incineration. Annie Leonard, an activist who has spent the past 10 years traveling the globe fighting environmental threats, narrates the Story of Stuff, delivering a rapid-fire, often humorous and always engaging story about "all our stuff-where it comes from and where it goes when we throw it away." Leonard examines the real costs of extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal, and she isolates the moment in history where she says the trend of consumption mania began. The Story of Stuff examines how economic policies of the post-World War II era ushered in notions of "planned obsolescence" and "perceived obsolescence" -and how these notions are still driving much of the U.S. and global economies today. Leonard's inspiration for the film began as a personal musing over the question, "Where does all the stuff we buy come from, and where does it go when we throw it out?" She traveled the world in pursuit of the answer to this seemingly innocent question, and what she found along the way were some very guilty participants and their unfortunate victims. "
