The consequences of Egypt's insatiable appetite for energy is becoming more pronounced. Amidst broader economic instability and reduced production rates of oil and natural gas the energy deficit is manifesting in electrical shortages throughout Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Aswan. Electricity consumption in Egypt peaks during the summer months, in part due to soaring temperatures and Ramadan1.

Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Ayman Abu Hadid recently announced that the ministry is planning to reclaim 40,000 acres in the Western Desert. During his meeting with ministry officials, Abu Hadid stressed the importance of using renewable energy sources in the process, citing plans to use irrigation tools operating via solar energy.

By Abdel Qader Ramadan US company Consilio Group, specialising in electricity generation from solar power, is planning to establish several projects in Egypt with capital of up to $100m. New and renewable energy is at the "top of the government's priorities," said Minister of Industry, Foreign Trade and Investment Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour after his meeting with Consilio Chairman Oliver Meissner.
