How to Avoid Contaminants and Preservatives in Food | The Diabetes Club - 0 views

  •
Modern medicine doesn't seem to be too interested in our wellness. It trains physicians to diagnose and eradicate disease, not to generate health. And while physicians need to know how to diagnose and treat illness, shouldn't they put more emphasis on telling us how to prevent chronic diseases? Could it be they don't do it because there is not much financial reward in prevention?

Signs That You May Have Chronic Pain - Red Wonderland - 0 views

  • One of the most telltale signs of chronic pain – and its worst aspect – is the fact that it lingers. As stated before, chronic pain may be caused by a confused nervous system, and it may end up in you feeling the pain for years. Holistic options like massages or stretches may not be the solution to stop the pain, and because of the stress mentioned, the subtle psychological aspects of chronic pain mean a more involved solution and a guiding expert hand is necessary to ease the negative impacts.
  •
Chronic pain can seriously impact your daily life, ruining the moments that should be enjoyable or relaxing. Even though there are about 25.3 million Americans suffering from chronic pain, there is still a group of people who believe that it doesn't actually exist, and as a result, diagnosing your pain as chronic can be a difficult task. While you should never diagnose yourself with any condition - it is always best to consult an experienced doctor - if you believe you are experiencing chronic pain, here are some of the following signs to watch out for.

Home Treatment for Winter Onset Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - 0 views

  •
Winter onset seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also referred to as winter depression, is a type of depression that re-occurs in people the same time each year and can last for the entire season. As the days become shorter and colder and less sunlight is available, some people begin to feel depression set in as well as anxiety, energy loss, increase in appetite, lack of interest in activities, concentration problems and weight gain. Women are diagnosed with SAD more often than men, yet men tend to have more severe symptoms. Family history of SAD, as well as how far from the equator you live, are also factors in whether you suffer from this type of depression. However, if you feel you may be suffering from SAD, there are ways to treat this depression and keep your mood levels more stable throughout the year.

Hormones play a role in everything we do - how we handle stress, how we absorb fat, and how we reproduce. When these hormones go haywire, that's when things can get scary. A common problem with endocrine disorders is that they're difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are often vague and seemingly unrelated.

Electric Wheelchair For Increased Independence - 0 views

  •
Electric wheelchair is a chair fitted with wheels. The device comes in variations allowing either manual propulsion by the seated occupant turning the rear wheels by hand, or electric propulsion by motors. There are often handles behind the seat to allow for different individuals to push. Electric Wheelchairs are used by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury, or disability. Disabled People who have difficulty sitting and walking often make use of a wheelbench. A basic manual wheelchair incorporates a seat, foot rests and four wheels: two, caster wheels at the front and two large wheels at the back. The two larger wheels in the back usually have handrims; two metal or plastic circles. Electric wheelchairs are propelled by a motor and battery. They are very sophisticated. They are operated with a joy stick or push buttons. Some electric wheelchairs use advanced technology and can climb up stairs, move across gravel and even raise up to give access to high shelves. Electric wheelchairs need strong frames to support the motor and battery so they are very heavy and also quite expensive. People with spinal cord injuries face similar decisions. Often a person with a spinal cord injury will use a motorized wheelchair, even though they are physically capable of using a manual chair. They don't do this because they are lazy. They do this to be more efficient with their energy reserves. People with spinal cord injuries often choose motorized wheelchairs to preserve their physical energy, so that they can complete the work. Sometimes need to save on physical energy so that have some allowance left over for intellectual or emotional pursuits. A mini-laboratory for all cases - Research News 03-2010-Topic 5 - Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft - 0 views

  •  »We’ll just have to wait for the results of the laboratory tests.« These words are familiar to many patients. It then usually takes several days for specimens to be sent to the laboratory and analyzed and for the doctor to receive the results. For many illnesses, however, a speedy diagnosis is crucial if the treatment is to be successful. In future, the patient might only have to sit in the waiting room for a few minutes until the results are ready. In a joint project, researchers from seven Fraunhofer institutes have developed a modular platform for in vitro diagnosis which enables various types of bioanalysis – of blood and saliva for example – to be conducted in the doctor’s surgery. »Thanks to its modular design our IVD platform is so flexible that it can be used for all possible bioanalytical tasks,« states Dr. Eva Ehrentreich-Förster from the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) in Potsdam-Golm.The core element of the mini-laboratory is a disposable cartridge made of plastic which can be fitted with various types of sensor. For an analysis the doctor fills the cartridge with reagents – binding agents which indicate the presence of certain substances such as antigens in the specimen material. Various tests or assays are available for different types of analysis. To perform an assay, the doctor only has to place the relevant substances in the cartridge and the test then takes place automatically. »We have optimized the assays so that up to 500 assay reactions can be conducted in parallel in a single analysis step,« explains Dr. Ehrentreich-Förster. Even in the case of complex analyses the doctor obtains a result within about 30 minutes. A new module on the reverse side of the cartridge also makes it possible to analyze the specimen material at DNA level.Once the cartridge has been prepared, the doctor places it in the measurement system. The results can be read out with either optical or electrochemical biosensors. The researchers have installed a readout window for both methods in the measurement system, which features a bypass through which the specimen is pumped.

Many illnesses can be reliably diagnosed through laboratory tests, but these in vitro analyses often use up valuable time. A system developed by Fraunhofer research scientists, which can carry out complex analyses on the spot, will soon be ready for the market.
