Javascript has always been important but usually it just hangs around in your browser, getting stuff done. The buzz on the internet is node.js, an event based, server side javascript based on Google's super-fast V8 engine. It allows you to make high performance, large scale applications. There still aren't that many tutorials out there, with the same ones getting republished over and over again. If you're going to use node.js for a web app for your free website they are worth taking a look at. Here are some of the best:

This article begins a "mini-series" of our in-depth coverage of important new elements in HTML5 to help you create media-rich pages that will work in any compliant browser. CSS & JS Auto-Refreshing with Live.js - 0 views
-
I want to share a fantastic little tool that I've only recently come across; Live.js, written by Martin Kool. This JavaScript file automatically checks for changes to your CSS and JavaScript files, and refreshes them. That means you can have your text editor in one half of the screen, and a web browser in the other. When you save changes in the editor, the updates are reflected immediately in your browser. It really helps to speed up your development time. A lot of text editors offer HTML previews and such, but they only work for plain .html pages. The great thing about Live.js is that it works on any webpage, including a working WordPress theme...............(.read more.)
Font sizing with rem - Snook.ca - 0 views
-
The problem with em-based font sizing is that the font size compounds. A list within a list isn't 14px, it's 20px. Go another level deeper and it's 27px!
-
The rem unit is relative to the root—or the html—element. That means that we can define a single font size on the html element and define all rem units to be a percentage of that. html { font-size: 62.5%; } body { font-size: 1.4rem; } /* =14px */ h1 { font-size: 2.4rem; } /* =24px */
-
We can specify the fall-back using px, if you don't mind users of older versions of Internet Explorer still being unable to resize the text (well, there's still page zoom in IE7 and IE8). To do so, we specify the font-size using px units first and then define it again using rem units. html { font-size: 62.5%; } body { font-size: 14px; font-size: 1.4rem; } /* =14px */ h1 { font-size: 24px; font-size: 2.4rem; } /* =24px */

With an advertising world keen to use every inch of a medium for brand or product experience, it is becoming increasingly popular to design websites with full-browser backgrounds. Using CSS, this can be achieved quite easily. Just drop a huge background image in a page with one line of code (Line wraps marked » -Ed.):

JQuery Scroll to top dynamic plugin - 0 views

"UItoTop jQuery Plugin Inspired by the great idea of David Walsh's jQuery topLink Plugin, I made a similar plugin but with two key differences, this one does not require you to add extra html markup or extra plugins to function. It will only work when JavaScript is turned on ( on purpose ), It's easy to setup with only one line of code, and it works cross-browser nicely ( Tested: IE6-8, FF, Safari )."
