A sideways style lends itself well to designs with a bit of an "arty" feel: brochure-style sites, galleries, portfolios, and perhaps even sites that make use of interesting info-graphics or charts. Successful horizontal layouts often use animation and graphics to highlight their sideways movement - a large number of these sites use colorful images and nice, big backgrounds that really show this off. Unusual also means unfamiliar, so a well-designed horizontal layout will also make good use of navigation elements such as menus, arrows, and buttons to overcome any usability hitches.

So what is YQL?  YQL looks like SQL but enables you to access live data from the Internet.  That definition doesn't really do it justice, however. The bigger point about YQL is that it includes many built-in bindings to various web APIs so that you can use almost every major web API in a consistent manner, with similar calls across the many possible APIs available to you.

Today we will create a slick animated content menu with jQuery for a restaurant theme. The menu items will be animated and when clicked, a content area with more information will appear. Also, he background image is going to change according to which menu item was clicked. The main idea is to have a restaurant menu with the different menu categories displayed. Each content are will have some foods/drinks listed. Once a content box is shown, the menu items are going to disappear. If we click on the close button to close the box, the menu items will be shown again.

Why Node?  Simply put, the purpose of node.js is "To provide a purely evented, non-blocking infrastructure to script highly concurrent programs."  This stands in contrast to many other concurrency models where threads and synchronization blocks are used, which can cause any number of issues.  Because of its lock free nature, and a bigger freedom from deadlocks, it allows for a more approachable way to concurrency.  The node.js site itself has a great amount of resources here to get started. In this series, I'm going to focus a little bit on getting started on node.js and how you can mix the Reactive Extensions for JavaScript into your node solutions.

We created a standalone face recognition system for access control. Users enroll in the system with the push of a button and can then log in with a different button. Face recognition uses an eigenface method. Initial testing indicates an 88% successful login rate with no false positives. There are currently commercially available systems for face recognition, but they are bulky, expensive, and proprietary. Our goal was to create a portable low-cost system. Our design consists of an Atmel ATmega644 8-bit microcontroller, a C3088 camera module with an OmniVision OV6620 CMOS image sensor, Atmel's AT45DB321D Serial Dataflash, a Varitronix MDLS16264 LCD module for output, a 9-volt battery, and a small wooden structure for chin support.
