The historical development of spam fighting is allowing computer-aware criminals to take the upper hand in the fight against what has now evolved into a completely technologically and organizationally merged threat to public safety. If we do not change our strategic approach immediately, the battle, indeed even the war may be all but lost... Of late, much has been said in the popular and computer press about a vector that is annoying, but hardly critical in nature: 'Image spam'. Spammers have jumped on the new technology of 'image-only' payloads, which morph one pixel per message, rendering them unique, and traditional check-sum blocking strategies ineffective... Fortunately this fraudulent stock-touting scheme leaves a paper trail that has allowed for some successful prosecutions in the latter half of the year. Stock spamming, while popular at present time is likely to decline as legal actions increase...

In 2006, 161 EB of informations were created or replicated world wide. IDC estimates the increase over 6 times this metric by 2010 - to 988 EB, or to 1 ZB a year.......

Hopefully by the end of the year, the semantic search technology of Twine will make a further step into the construction of structured data on the Web, and its successor T2 will be released. From an interview with Nova Spivack (CEO of Radar Networks, the company behind Twine) we can argue four main points..........

"A new microformat for online news has been developed by the Media standards Trust and the Web Science Reaseach Initiative: it's called hNews. The goal is to make relevant elements of news articles machine-readable, and at the same time, to disply these metadata in a user-friendly format. ....."

A project by the Electronic Frontier Foundation has been created to help teachers provide accurate informations about the laws concerning digital rights & the concepts of copyright and piracy.

The Open philosophy as applied to movies & animations deals with three related concepts: * open, collaborative projects maintained by a community; * open source software; * the copyleft / public domain side of the digital rights spectrum.

The latest project by Stephen Wolfram is defined as the first "computational knowledge engine", something capable of answering factual question for you. The Wolfram engine is described as "a proprietary system based on fields of knowledge, containing terabytes of curated data and millions of lines of algorithms to represent real-world knowledge as we know it".

Kaltura is an open source video platform, from its video codec to its back-end systems for uploading, hosting, embedding, syndicating, analyzing and inserting advertisements into videos. Anyone can use the code for free: clients pay only for custom installation, integration, and support, depending on their level of traffic. Kaltura is also co-founder of the Open Video Conference that took place in NYC..........
