EchoEcho's Javascript tutorial provides a good start on how to learn javascript. I like how they have specific sections the most common uses of javascript(Browser detection, form validation, animated buttons, cookies, drop down menu, multiple link, frameset script, and popup windows).

Angelfire.com Review - 0 views

  •
Strengths: Free to join, offers tutorials and widgets, you have access to other Angelfire pages broken up by genre Weaknesses: Once you exceed certain bandwidth, you must pay. Also, I think a page that hadn't been edited in years was deleted.
  •
Angelfire's been around for quite a while, though they haven't grown as quickly with people's needs, I think. The downside is no access to databases or programming, which for free is fine. Another upside is that it is a Lycos site, so probably (though I'm not sure) few problems with downtime or slow servers. (+10)
  •
I don't remember having problems with downtime or slow servers using Angelfire (are those the same as time out errors?); however, I could see how your additional downsides would affect advanced programmers.

Here's an interesting site I encountered looking for CSS cheat sheets. I'm not sure how useful it might be, it because the entry is dated 2006. But the eye-candy on the page attracted me.

Do you want to design like the pros? | 365 Web Applications for Designers - 0 views

  •
This shows how to set up style sheets so you don't have to reinvent the wheel every time you want to design an element similar to what you did last time. This makes it easier for type, color and other elements to have a continuity and to feel more cohesive. It also saves valuable time if you know you are going to use a certain design style over and over.

I just want to be sure that all the work I've done, including my bookmarks for webprog-1-a have been seen. I am missing grades for work that I've done in 1-a and 1-b...I'm sure it's hard to keep track of everything. Thank You!
    • Alex Halavais

Matt, I try to check every day, but sometimes I go a couple of days without. If I'm still missing something of your, and it shows up in your collected bookmarks, let me know and I'll do a quick audit, making sure all your bookmarks (assuming they meet the standards of the challenge) show up in the gradebook.

Who ultimately decides what new coding practices are? Do they have pow-wows every X amount of years to discuss the evolution of code? How long before they become mainstream and accepted by all browsers and designers/programmers alike?
    • Alex Halavais

It's complicated. W3C is considered the standards issueing group, and yes, they pretty much continually talk about what needs to happen in the next standard. In that, it's a bit like the video standards, with the MPEG group deciding what should be included as part of an MPEG-2 or MPEG-6 standard. However, it's also the case that there is a bit more variability in how well browsers follow that standard. As the book suggests, it's much better today than it was a few years back, when you would have effectively had to design different sites for each browser. There are still some oddities in Internet Explorer that you will likely have to design hacks for, but it's not like it used to be.

Are there any real differences between the tag and the tag? I have only really ever used the and don't recall ever even hearing about the same with and
    • Alex Halavais

I suspect the sticky note ate your tags! The difference between em and i is pretty much semantic. i and b were introduced by the browsers as tags, and not by the W3C. So to write valid code, you should really use the strong and em. But I will admit to slipping into i and b with some frequency. Again, best to get in the habit of strong and em, if at all possible.

What time on the due date are the assignments due (morn, afternoon, midnight)? I anticipate getting assignments done in advance, but if ever one needed to be tweaked and resubmitted for credit I would like to know the exact time.
    • Alex Halavais

The last second of the marked day, EST, let's say.
  •
My understanding is: do as many assignments as you want, or think you need to do. As for points, doing enough assignments correctly to total 100 points per module will get you an A-. An A- will be upgraded to an A if you show consistent creativity. Only those with an A- qualify for the "Creativity Upgrade". A grade of B won't do it. If I explained anything incorrectly, someone please correct me. My own take on it? Learn code because you really want to learn code, show effort, and try to have some fun with it. :)

Web Programming :: 1-6: Images - 0 views

When I view my recipe page on the desktop the image and links work fine. But when I publish it to the internet, the link for the image works but the image does not show up. I followed the steps meticulously and cannot figure out what has happened. Can you let me know what I missed?
  •
Hopefully I already answered this, but in case not: *Everything* for the site has to get uploaded to the server. So, if you are including an image, the image also has to go up to the server. Next week, when we do style sheets, the style sheet has to go up to the server. Since it's a whole 'nother computer, you need to make sure all the pieces that make up your page/site make it up.

Getting columnated is a little tricky for beginners like myself. In lecture 2-3: Columnated, I added a comment with a link to a site that lays out the fundamentals of the language used. I think this would be especially helpful to someone who aspires to be a web producer because a producer needs to speak in html and css language. The link is http://css.maxdesign.com.au/floatutorial/definitions.htm

Question on video at around 23:30: While different browsers don't all support the same features, will they at least support basics like flow and positioning in like fashion? I recently had a heck of a time with a positioning difference between Firefox and IE, and I still wonder if it was my code, or the way IE dealt with it.

My recommendation is the one I suggest here: NearlyFreeSpeech. It's a new host to me, but comes recommended, and does everything we need it to. I use Dreamhost for this (and most of my) sites. It's a solid host--and works pretty well. I'm not sure I love it, but moving costs (in time) are too high for me to choose to go elsewhere...

What's the difference between naming an HTML file with .html or .htm? Both work, right?
    • Alex Halavais

HTML is the "correct" choice, though .htm will also work. The latter is a result of limitations of the early DOS & Windows systems, which could only handle 3 letter extensions (and 8 letter filenames). Why is it still used today? Microsoft continues to push it as a feature, not a bug, and those using MS servers or ASP are more likely to use it, unless, of course, it is a .asp page. But the standard usage is still .html.
