I have been thinking about the meaning of democracy to ordinary citizens in South Africa, we just had our 5th National and Provincial Elections and it was my first time voting this whole experience opened my mind. I started to wonder if we understand the meaning of Democracy, people fought and died for our right to participate in choosing who should govern the country. This right seems to be taken for granted by citizens as most of them did not pitch for elections this had me thinking as to whether they understand the price that was paid for this right
Democracy advocates that the people shall govern and gives them the power to choose who shall govern yet we seem to be chained in the mentality of the past. We have power yet we not using it effectively and then we want to complain. My question is simple what does Democracy mean to you as an individual. To me it means having power to govern by participating in the activities that promotes equality and freedom to my being.
