Bringing concepts to early learning in Mathematics - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Our beliefs about mathematics play a significant role in how we approach learning within the discipline. These beliefs are established by the nature of our early engagement with mathematics and are difficult to change once established. For many people mathematics is viewed as a subject that is not for them. Indeed the situation is so bad that many people will say that they are not a maths person and approach mathematics with fear and anxiety.

From Good to Great: Writing well by Thinking like Authors - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
A common challenge for students and teachers is how to develop a great idea for a piece of writing. Too often students struggle with the process of finding inspiration for their writing. They have a vague idea for the story they hope to tell, but all too quickly it transforms into a list of events with little or no detail. The goal here is to provide our students with a process to use during the planning process. The hope is that by identifying the type of thinking required during the early phases of ideation and to focus their attention on details, that the stories our students subsequently compose will be more enjoyable to read. Hopefully, this process helps.

Fostering a dispositional perspective of curiosity - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
When we are young, we are naturally curious. We ask many, many questions. As we encounter the world, our consciousness is bombarded by a plethora of opportunities for curiosity. And at this early stage of exploring and discovering the world we inhabit, there is no filter between our sense of curiosity and our expression of our it. If we are curious, we will be asking questions and heaven help anyone close enough to be a potential source of answers. - At school, our relationship to both curiosity and inquiry changes.

Omeka - 0 views

  • Whether you’re a scholar, an enthusiast, an archivist or librarian, you’ll find Omeka easy to use and customize to your needs. To use a phrase from early on in the project, Omeka is a great tool to “show your stuff” on the web. Digital photos, scans of documents, texts, video.. anything. It will help organize those objects, and present them elegantly on the web.
  • WordPress don’t use structured metadata the way that scholars, libraries, and archives do. We have controlled vocabularies, 50 ways of classifying the same thing, and need a system that allows us to easy do that.

Better late than never as I have just joined this group. ReadSpeaker provides text to speech (TTS) engines for websites and iOS and Android apps which combine text reading with word by word text highlighting on any end user hardware. The service has a growing range of early Australian adopters including Centrelink, Comcare, Dept of Health and Ageing, Dept of Human Services, FAHCSIA, and the Australian Paralympic Committee. In elearning, adopters include Gale and Cengage. I would be happy to provide information to interested elearning professionals and I can be reached on richard.ings@readspeaker.com.
