  • 2013 Engineering: Essential to Our Health Contest Description It is hard to imagine what the world would be like without modern medicine. Doctors today have a wealth of tools at their disposal to combat human suffering. From complex robotic surgical suites that enable surgeons to operate on patients thousands of miles away to simple storage mechanisms for vaccines in the developing world, engineering and technology are central to the way we fight disease. There have been many successes on the road to a healthier planet, but many battles are still left to fight. • Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. The more a person smokes, the more likely that person will develop COPD. However, some people smoke for years and never get COPD.In rare cases, nonsmokers who lack a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin can develop emphysema.Other risk factors for COPD are:Exposure to certain gases or fumes in the workplaceExposure to heavy amounts of secondhand smoke and pollutionFrequent use of cooking fire without proper ventilation
