Why Apple Is Gunning for Microsoft - Datamation - 1 views

  •
"Apple announced a few new products yesterday, including a new thin and light iPad Air model. But mostly, the event was an assault on its old rival Microsoft. Always disciplined in messaging, the message from Apple was loud and clear: Microsoft has no vision and their software is wildly overpriced."

Tony Vincent's Learning in Hand - Blog - iPad 2's Display Mirrored on a Big S... - 0 views

"A feature that has long been request by educators has finally arrived in iPad 2: video mirroring. Video mirroring shows exactly what's on your device's screen on a second display, like a projector, television, or monitor. We're used to video mirroring with laptops--many teachers do this everyday. iPad 2 requires either the Apple VGA Adapter or Apple Digital AV Adapter. The VGA adapter connects to most projectors while the digital adapter connects to HDMI, which is common on newer televisions. Apple Digital AV Adapter also outputs sound while the VGA adapter outputs only video to the display."

Inside Mac OS X Snow Leopard: Exchange Support - RoughlyDrafted Magazine - 0 views

  •
"Windows Enthusiasts like to spin Apple's support for Exchange on the iPhone and in Snow Leopard as endorsement of Microsoft in the server space. From another angle, Apple is reducing its dependance upon Microsoft's client software, weakening Microsoft's ability to hold back and dumb down its Mac offerings at Apple's expense."

Apple, Microsoft, VMware: Everyone's building open-source software | ZDNet - 0 views

  • Gartner reported that on average, 29% of deployed code was open source, and that by 2015 at least 95% of mainstream IT organizations will leverage open source solutions within mission critical software deployments
  • “Open collaborative development via communities is widely understood and accepted, and corporate IT organizations are realizing that these characteristics can be applied to improve their internal development as well, and many are looking to apply them to enhance their own internal methods, typically in conjunction with adopting agile or lean methodologies.”
  •
"Zemlin said that all successful tech companies are now using and contributing to open source communities. "Besides the usual suspects--Amazon, Google, IBM-- there are companies that you may not think of as being big open-source companies, even competitors, now admit that they must participate in open source."

Apple - Batteries - iPhone - 0 views

  •
"Paying attention to just a few common sense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPhone. The most important thing is to keep your iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (including the glove box). Heat will degrade your battery's performance the most. "

As part of its continued focus on optimising technology in schools, the Victorian Government, with support from Apple, is examining how iPads can be best used in schools. In a classroom with 1-to-1 devices such as the iPad, contemporary ways of learning can be optimised. How to Run the iOS Simulator App in Windows for Testing Websites - 0 views

  •
"The iOS Simulator is primarily targeted at Apple developers for them to develop iPad and iPhone apps on a Mac. That said, if you create websites, you can also use the iOS Simulator app to test your web designs on an iPhone or iPad without actually having the device. The iOS Simulator includes the native Safari app that is very close to the real thing. "

"The past few months have indeed seen a surge of AirPlay-compatible desktop utilities and apps that take advantage of Apple's technology for audio and video streaming. Will iBooks Author Create A Wave of Self-Published Teachers? | Wandering Academic - 0 views

  • But lo, there is a tool for the Mac that makes iPad-friendly books, allows you to print and share individual pages of a book, and allows for handwritten notes. It doesn’t, like iBooks, allow the author to update all the readers with a newly edited copy, but copy-paste will work just fine. It’s called Pages. For the teacher who self-publishes, Pages is the better, more flexible tool for now.

As with anything Apple, the recent education-themed announcement has everyone dreaming of a better future for the children, and all that. The question you keep reading is "will e-textbooks change the face of education?", just like people asked about the iPad when it first came out. And while I'm very impressed by the design of the new textbooks available on iBooks 2, and I love the fact that they include touchable animations and videos to supplement text, the books themselves don't seem revolutionary.

"Ask an expert and they will tell you, the iPad sucks. They a only any good for media consumption, You can only do what Apple allow and it doesn't do Flash. All in all, it is a severely gimped toy, an expensive one to boot. So, I've had my iPad now for about 8 months now and with the release of iPad 2 imminent, I thought I would have a go at tackling some of the more ridiculous criticisms of the device."
