iPads growing more common in classrooms | The Crimson White - 0 views

  • The use of iPads would encourage students to collaborate and teach each other rather than submitting to the traditional transfer of knowledge from professor to student in order to learn
  • iPads will begin to change the way professors envision and conduct lectures so that the “sage on the stage” approach of a professor dictating knowledge to students will be replaced with a collaborative method of teaching
  • “With the tablet computing initiative, we want to develop or identify early adopters of this technology, to ‘plant the seeds’ of innovation and, eventually, mainstream this and future technologies into our school and teaching,”
  •
""Technology is central to how we learn and how we communicate," Florence said. "This is an initiative to allow faculty to experiment with how tablet computers can help improve and expand their teaching.""

Digital Leaders - Why you need them in your school? (Plus a few tips on how to get star... - 0 views

  • I can’t see how a 1:1 programme could be properly supported without Digital Leaders in the classroom. There isn’t the funding or manpower to support all teachers and students and, if I’m honest, I think fellow students are better equipped in many situations
  •
Digital Leader programme "Show them something they are interested in and they want to know more. If they come up against a barrier, they want to overcome it. If they can find out something no-one else knows, they want to share it. Successful Digital Leaders are the epitome of the curious student with more to offer schools than perhaps any other student body at this time. "Internet connections can be unreliable when traveling and while it can be an inconvenience, more and more lack of a good wireless connection means missing out on work, contact with family, and figuring out just what to do on your short trip to Istanbul. In most cases however you can plan to stay connected to those barely-there signals and find out where Internet might be hiding right under your nose."

It is late but am I excited, you bet I am! I have managed to get the Windows powered assessment and reporting software Accelerus that our school uses running on my OSX laptop. Check out the screenshot below. Was a bit tricky but Google was my friend as I tried out a couple of different ideas. The best guide I found was perhaps this one. It does require a knowledge of partitions and terminal commands but it worked a treat fo me. Along the way, I learned heaps and enjoyed the tinkering. I might have some fun and try to get Ubuntu Linux running again on this computer.

QR Codes: Are You Ready For Paper-Based Hyperlinks? - 0 views

  •
"You've probably seen them in newspapers, magazines or other paper-based publications: two-dimensional bar codes, called quick response codes (QR codes). What are they? They have been described as paper-based hyperlinks, and this is a good description. You simply take a picture of a QR code with your smart phone, and you get redirected to a website using your cell phone's browser. They can also be used digitally-you can append a QR code to a Tweet, or they can be displayed on a web page to transfer contact information directly to a cell phone, for example. This technology is blurring the distinction between smart phones, digital destination and content, and paper-based communication mediums."

"In recent months I have noticed that I have been invited with increasing frequency to join different tribes from the UK to the USA and Australia. I haven't had to attend initiation ceremonies, shave my head or tatoo my torso. Is Social Media Making Us Tribal? These tribes are not local or indigenous but global and the shared theme is not indigenous but of common interests, shared goals, aspirations and passions that span countries and continents."
