TED Talks Demystified for Teachers | The History Teacher's Attic - 2 views

  •
So, in the interest of preparing for teaching a new course next year, and wanting to sort TED out a bit, I've created the following list based on disciplines (organizing knowledge or research by discipline is, it should be pointed out, in stark contrast to the real objective of TED Talks in general). I really like this TED fella, and I hope he doesn't mind:)

These are 'influential presentations' but far better suited to the higher level thinker than the Year 6 class. YouTube is better for variety of video.

These are indeed 'influential presentations' but better suited to higher level thinkers - not an upper primary class. YouTube offers better suited, more catchy videos.

While TED looks to be useful and informative for adults, I have found it difficult to find any presentations relevant to the grade 5 and 6 level.

TED is an acronym for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It is a series of videos of 'great minds' speaking on their area of expertise. You could find small snippets of really good stuff - but YouTube has shorter, catchier, more visually stimulating stuff

Dan Meyer: Math class needs a makeover | Video on TED.com - 6 views

  •
"Today's math curriculum is teaching students to expect -- and excel at -- paint-by-numbers classwork, robbing kids of a skill more important than solving problems: formulating them. "
  •
I know my students are learning how to use a text book, take them outside and measure/photograph a problem and they are left hanging. This is a great view on how to get students to discover knowledge. It is a powerful tool.

Read through this article and highlight or comment on things that you think would resonate with your students or colleagues.
  • He is a big thinker, always chasing new ideas, and a conversation with him can feel like a one-man TED conference, dotted with references to the latest work by behavioral psychologists and management gurus and design theorists.

You don't make progress by doing the same thing as everyone else!
  • in America that if you worked hard and you showed real grit, that you could be successful,” he said. “Strangely, we’ve now forgotten that. People who have an easy time of things, who get 800s on their SAT’s, I worry that those people get feedback that everything they’re doing is great. And I think as a result, we are actually setting them up for long-term failure.
    • Jackie O'Brien

I know that we are actively working with parents to realise that their child does not have to be 'happy' al of the time. Making mistakes, experiencing failure and learning what 'not' to do are valuable aspects of education.
