  • 1) With Teacher (small group instruction)-
  • Guided Math is similar to Guided Reading in that the teacher puts the students into small groups and the students work on specific standards being taught in centers around the room
  • Students are placed in ability level groups and taught the standards of the curriculum.  Differentiation is achieved as students are in different groups and instruction is changed to hit the needs of the student
  • Math instruction for Guided Math should be 1 hour.
  • *Groups are made based on how kids did on their pretest.  This is differentiation at its best. Work on the concepts with the kids who struggled and extend and hit high order thinking skills for the kids who got it. Your groups will change weekly as your standards change

Gentilly Terrace students learn the importance of saving | NOLA.com - 1 views

  • Just like in the real world, students from sixth to eighth grade were given the opportunity to apply for one of six positions of teller or greeter by completing an application form, interviewing with teachers and a Capital One representative and submitting a one-page essay on why they wanted to become a banker.
  • The minimum amount to open a KidzBank account is 50 cents. After that, students can deposit any amount upward of 10 cents. The average deposit is 75 cents. No interest is earned on the savings accounts, but the children are learning about the concept of interest in the financial literacy curriculum. The bank is open only on Friday, so it is common for students to ask school administrators during the week to hold on to their money so they are not tempted to spend it.
  • The students must wait until the end of fifth grade to make withdrawals, and then will need a parent's permission to take money out.

I have requested more information about this program, but thought it was a great community partnership that has cross-curricular opportunities.

Guided Math Groups - 1 views

  • Below is my weekly schedule.  Just like my reading, I approach math with a combination of small group and whole group instruction. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Whole group lesson.  Math mini lesson Meet with two small math groups     Math mini lesson Meet with two small math groups     Math mini lesson Meet with two small math groups     Whole group lesson.
  • After I give my pre-assessment, I quickly score the sheets.  Then I look for common errors and try to sort into similar stacks.  I like to have between three to four stacks. Each stack is a guided math group.  If I give a longer pre- assessment that will help guide placing kids into groups for the whole unit, then I look for one concept and try to find common errors.  Then I keep the tests and resort them when we are ready to cover the next concept in the unit.

Teacher-Led School Innovates With Student Regrouping - 2 views

  • the teachers arrived at the idea of personalized schedules for all the students, varying on whether they need more-intensive instruction on basic concepts or are ready for more in-depth instruction. Using a data-analysis tool, the publishing group culled information from state, local, and classroom tests.
  • Crucially, teachers are expected to target the same standards, but their lessons explore them in different levels of breadth and depth depending on the performance level.
  • Teachers have common planning at the end of every school day, in addition to their regular prep periods. At those meetings, they’re able to discuss the results from their lessons and go over data generated from quarterly “benchmark” assessments. Then, they can decide whether a student needs to be moved to one of the other classes—something that can occur on a weekly or, potentially, even daily basis as necessary.

  • “If you’re going to make a move like this, to use some form of differential placement and differentiated instruction, you need to do it in a way that keeps high-quality instruction for low-achieving students,” Mr. Gamoran said.
