Google released what they call the Static Maps API. Not unlike the previous Google Charts API, this is basically just a parametrized image URL - the light-weight* sibling of the JavaScript Maps API.

Mapstraction provides a common API for various javascript mapping APIs to enable switching. Developers can code their applications once, and then easily switch mapping provider based on project needs, terms and conditions, and new functionality.
