The Advances in Educational Technologies & Instructional Design (AETID) Book Series is a resource where researchers, students, administrators, and educators alike can find the most updated research and theories regarding technology's integration within education and its effect on teaching as a practice.
Introduction This edited collection promotes research in the use of virtual reality in education. It will outline current projects that integrate virtual reality to promote learner inquiry, discovery, and application and will highlight innovative uses of virtual reality in K-12 and higher education domains. Currently, virtual worlds are increasingly being used in higher education; over 250 institutions of higher education worldwide are now teaching using Second Life, one of the most popular 3‐D worlds. Even though virtual reality has actively been adopted in education areas such as the social sciences and medical fields, by and large, faculty need to be more informed and educated about utilizing virtual reality to enhance instruction.
Objective of the Book The edited collection explores the uses, strategies, and considerations necessary for utilizing virtual reality in education. This approach includes a consideration of teaching pedagogy, instructional design, and learning outcomes -not simply virtual reality as a technological tool. Thus, this collection presents not only the practical strategies or logistics for use of virtual reality in education, but also frames or proposes a pedagogical model through highlighting a wide range of frameworks and exemplary cases or projects supported by valid theoretical stances. Our goal is to: * Introduce the role of virtual reality in developing knowledge and skills among learners * Showcase exemplary cases or projects demonstrating how virtual reality has been designed or implemented in face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid format courses in education * Demonstrate creative and innovative strategies and possibilities for introducing learners to virtual reality-related activities * Consider key theoretical & policy underpinnings for use of virtual reality * Identify challenges, issues, and barriers to integrating virtual reality-based learning
Target Audience The book can be used to support the integration of virtual reality in education programs (K-12 & higher education) and to establish foundations for course design, program development, and institutional strategic planning. The intended audience for this book includes teachers in K-12, university professors, and academic leadership in education. Education faculties who are attempting to incorporate virtual reality into their curriculum are also key audiences.
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: * Review of the Literature in Virtual Reality * Pedagogy & Course Design using Virtual Reality * Instructional Design using Virtual Reality * Assessment & Evaluation of Virtual Worlds and/or Virtual Learning * Virtual Reality in K-12 * Virtual Reality in Teacher Education * Immersive Environments * Virtual Game-based Learning * Virtual Field Trip Models * Applications of Virtual Reality in Curriculum & Instruction * Second Life in Education * Desk Top Virtual Reality * Total immersion Virtual Reality * Computer Simulation * Serious Games * Augmented Reality * Case Studies on Virtual Reality-related Technology * Policies, Issues, or Challenges in Virtual Reality Integration
Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before October 31, 2014, a 1,000 to 2,000 word chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by November 30, 2014 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters will be due by February 28, 2015. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.
