myliblog: Uncle Bobby's Wedding - 0 views

  • Recently, a library patron challenged (urged a reconsideration of the ownership or placement of) a book called "Uncle Bobby's Wedding.
  • ownership
  • I suspect the book will get a lot of challenges in 2008-2009. So I offer my response, purging the patron's name, for other librarians.

  • You suggested that the book could be “placed in an area designating the subject matter,” or “labeled for parental guidance” by stating that “some material may be inappropriate for young children.” I have two responses.

"Recently, a library patron challenged (urged a reconsideration of the ownership or placement of) a book called "Uncle Bobby's Wedding." Honestly, I hadn't even heard of it until that complaint. But I did read the book, and responded to the patron, who challenged the item through email and requested that I respond online (not via snail-mail) about her concerns."

The Democratic And Republican National Convention Speeches, As Seen Through Wordle | Th... - 0 views

  •
I was planning on using Wordle in some capacity this semester. Here's a neat example of what it does.
  •
Wordle is an online application created by IBM's senior software engineer Jonathan Feinberg. Using text entered by its users, it creates visually alluring "word clouds" that show you the frequency at which words occur within that text. The more often a word occurs, the bigger it appears in the cloud.

The artwork of Dan McCarthy - 0 views

Analyze these seven paintings and then try to determine if any message exists behind the artist's theme. After articulating what you think the artist is arguing, discuss how he uses rhetoric as a means of persuasion. In your opinion, is his rhetoric effective?

Read the following poem by ee Cummings carefully. What is the message of the poem? Does it have multiple messages? How does Cummings' unique arrangement of letters, words and lines help or hinder his message?

MediaStorm: Common Ground by Scott Strazzante - 0 views

  • On July 2, 2002, Jean and Harlow Cagwin watched as their home — the last remnant of their 118-acre cattle farm in Lockport, Illinois — was torn down clearing the way for a new housing development. Several years later, Ed and Amanda Grabenhofer and their four children moved into the new Willow Walk subdivision, their house just yards from where the Cagwin's home once stood.

I don't see a "speech bubble in the upper right hand corner of this box," but I am able to hover over "Actions" and then select "Add sticky note."

Interesting. I bet there are compatibilty issues across browsers. What are you using? I am using Firefox 3 on a PC. I haven't tried this in Safari on my Mac yet, but I doubt its functionality is the same. I think the best solution will be to install the Diigo toolbar in the latest version of Firefox on Mac or PC. I generally require my students to download Firefox anyway.

I'm using Firefox 2 on a PC, with Diigolet (the toolbar button) instead of the Diigo toolbar (which seems the most likely issue). It seemed easier and less invasive to add a toolbar button than to add a whole toolbar.

  • Common Ground introduces us to the lives touched by this land, as photographer Scott Strazzante takes us on a visual journey exploring the differences and similarities of these two families while simultaneously asking us to look at what is common among us all.

This would make an excellent informal writing assignment, as would many other slideshows from Mediastorm. Great resource.

Consider the portraits in Simon Hoegsberg's Faces of New York project. What can you tell about these people just by looking at their faces? Are the decisions we make about the way we keep our faces rhetorical? If so, how?
