According to hueylong.com, "Long was revered by the masses as a champion of the common man and demonized by the powerful as a dangerous demagogue." This shows a surprisingly uncritical perspective of a man who, although he was brilliant and obviously did many great things to help Louisiana, was also a deeply corrupt and shady character. For example, according to wikipedia, Long said that "I used to try to get things done by saying 'please.' Now...I dynamite 'em out of my path." In 1935, Raymond Gram Swing wrote in The Nation that Long "will assail President Roosevelt with a passion which may at first offend listeners, but in the end he might stir up opposition of a bitterness the President has not tasted in his life. Obviously, he cannot succeed while the country still has hopes of the success of the New Deal and trusts the President. Huey's chances depend on those sands of hope and trust running out. He is no menace if the President produces reform and recovery."
