    Wednesday I interviewed a couple of the core personnel for my sociology research. I was struck by the 38-year history of this group which is focused on the mentorship of young people. I was told it was the first group to include non-Chinese people in the lion dance, also the first and possibly only non-profit lion dance group in Chinatown.

  • Margaret Chin, a longtime housing and immigration rights advocate who grew up on Mott Street, is the first Asian-American woman on the New York City Council and the first Chinese-American to represent Chinatown, a feat achieved after three losing bids for the Council. She taught for 14 years in LaGuardia Community College’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education, and in 1974 helped establish Asian Americans for Equality, an advocacy group.

    I find her background to be an indication of how cohesive the community's organizations are with mobilization and political power.
