Clusters, networks, and innovation Stefano Breschi, Franco Malerba 0 Resenhas Oxford University Press, 2005 - 499 páginas Governments and regional authorities often express the belief that the key to prosperity and economic expansion is related to the ability of countries to sustain regional clusters of competitiveness and innovation. The book reviews the most important conceptual approaches to the analysis of the emergence, growth and evolution of clusters of innovation. Drawing from the different experiences of industrial districts and high-tech regions such as Silicon Valley, Boston's biotech region and Hsinchu-Taipei, the contributions in this book offer a broad interpretative framework and policy implications for the creations and strengthening of competitive clusters. Themes include: q The wide variety of existing clusters and the diversity on their emergence and growth q The international mobility of factors and demand linkages q The role of different network types and the social setting q The accumulation of capabilities on key large actors and the importance of spinoffs and new firm formation q The role of different learning regimes and sectoral specificities q The importance of social networks, labor mobility and face to face contacts as vehicles of knowledge spillovers Broad implications are drawn for the design of policies to encourage successful economic clusters in developed and developing clusters.

Clusters and entrepreneurship - J ECON GEOGR - 0 views

This article examines the role of regional clusters in regional entrepreneurship. We focus on the distinct influences of convergence and agglomeration on growth in the number of start-up firms as well as in employment in these new firms in a given region-industry. While reversion to the mean and diminishing returns to entrepreneurship at the region-industry level can result in a convergence effect, the presence of complementary economic activity creates externalities that enhance incentives and reduce barriers for new business creation. Clusters are a particularly important way through which location-based complementarities are realized. The empirical analysis uses a novel panel dataset from the Longitudinal Business Database of the Census Bureau and the US Cluster Mapping Project. Using this dataset, there is significant evidence of the positive impact of clusters on entrepreneurship. After controlling for convergence in start-up activity at the region-industry level, industries located in regions with strong clusters (i.e. a large presence of other related industries) experience higher growth in new business formation and start-up employment. Strong clusters are also associated with the formation of new establishments of existing firms, thus influencing the location decision of multi-establishment firms. Finally, strong clusters contribute to start-up firm survival.

A Life Cycle for Clusters? The Dynamics of Agglomeration, Change, and Adaption Series: Contributions to Economics Press, Kerstin 2006, XIV, 245 p. 40 illus., Softcover ISBN: 978-3-7908-1710-2 A Physica Verlag Heidelberg book Ships in 3 - 5 business days $99.00 ABOUT THIS BOOK REVIEWS The phenomenon of non-random spatial concentrations of firms in one or few related sectors (clusters) is intensively debated in economic theory and policy. The euphoria about successful clusters however neglects that historically, many thriving clusters did deteriorate into old industrial areas. This book studies the determinants of cluster survival by analyzing their adaptability to change in the economic environment. Linking theoretic knowledge with empirical observations, a simulation model (based in the N/K method) is developed, which explains when and why the cluster's architecture assists or hampers adaptability. It is found that architectures with intermediate degrees of division of labour and more collective governance forms foster adaptability. Cluster development is thus path dependent as architectures having evolved over time impact on the likelihood of future survival. The shifting geography of competitive advantage: clusters, networks and firms - J ECON ... - 0 views

We consider the dynamics of knowledge-based sources of advantage as they move between geographical locations and multinational and other firm level networks using the specialist context of Formula 1 motor over a 59-year period. We suggest that shifts in competitive advantage are underpinned by the movement of both architectural and component knowledge at both the firm and cluster level, and in particular we suggest that isolated firms can both benefit from and add to cluster level knowledge. We conclude by suggesting ways in which MNEs can adapt their approach to both location and knowledge development in order to enhance their ability to create competitive advantage.

Knowledge Economies: Clusters, Learning and Cooperative - 0 views

Knowledge Economies: Clusters, Learning and Cooperative Advantage Philip Cooke London, Routledge, 2001, ISBN 0-415-16409-5 The rapid growth of technology-based industries, most visible first in California's Silicon Valley and along Route 128 in Boston, and subsequently followed by Silicon Glens, Prairies, Alleys and Valleys throughout the world, has drawn lots of attention to industry clusters and networks. Often without being able to define or identify the process very precisely, economic development professionals and policy makers quickly grabbed on to the idea that there seemed to be an opportunity for a whole new round of proximity-based synergy and economic development. This synergy appeared to be much stronger than the effects of agglomeration which economists and planners had known about for decades, perhaps well over a century. It is not just based on companies jointly taking advantage of a large labour force, reducing their transaction costs by co-locating, and attracting specialized suppliers to the concentration of potential customers, but it appeared to facilitate the basic invention, application and growth process itself. Furthermore, somewhat to the surprise of those who thought that computer and other communication technology would make distance irrelevant, these new business networks continue to have a strong spatial component.

"From Buildings to Cities: Techniques for the Multi-Scale Analysis of Urban Form and Function The built environment is a significant factor in many urban processes, yet direct measures of built form are seldom used in geographical studies. Representation and analysis of urban form and function could provide new insights and improve the evidence base for research. So far progress has been slow due to limited data availability, computational demands, and a lack of methods to integrate built environment data with aggregate geographical analysis. Spatial data and computational improvements are overcoming some of these problems, but there remains a need for techniques to process and aggregate urban form data. Here we develop a Built Environment Model of urban function and dwelling type classifications for Greater London, based on detailed topographic and address-based data (sourced from Ordnance Survey MasterMap). The multi-scale approach allows the Built Environment Model to be viewed at fine-scales for local planning contexts, and at city-wide scales for aggregate geographical analysis, allowing an improved understanding of urban processes. This flexibility is illustrated in the two examples, that of urban function and residential type analysis, where both local-scale urban clustering and city-wide trends in density and agglomeration are shown. While we demonstrate the multi-scale Built Environment Model to be a viable approach, a number of accuracy issues are identified, including the limitations of 2D data, inaccuracies in commercial function data and problems with temporal attribution. These limitations currently restrict the more advanced applications of the Built Environment Model."

hanks to everyone who has shared links and leads to webinars and other programs! To clarify. I will post the final list of FREE webinars and other distance learning programs late next week. I will also post separate lists of FOR-FEE online degree programs, certification programs, and fee-based distance learning programs. Examples of these include Ryerson University's Certificate in Food Security and Green Mountain College's new Masters in Sustainable Food Systems. So, please do continue to send me examples of all of the above! Cheers, Duncan -----Original Message----- From: Sustainable Agriculture Network Discussion Group [mailto:SANET-MG@LISTS.IFAS.UFL.EDU] On Behalf Of Duncan Hilchey Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 12:59 PM To: SANET-MG@LISTS.IFAS.UFL.EDU Subject: [SANET-MG] Food System Webinar Compilation Dear SANET List, Below is what I've collected so far toward a compilation of free webinars and distance learning programs of potential interest to food system and agricultural development professionals.  I do not believe this is exhaustive by any means. However, this is based on what folks (on COMFOOD, SANET, and FOOD PLANNING lists) led me to and what I was able to glean on my own from the Internet. I excluded some recommendations which I felt were too limited in scope. On the whole, the sustainable/organic agriculture and "good food" communities seems to have done an excellent job getting comprehensive programs online. I was less successful in identifying webinars and distance learning programs on food security. I do not know if there's a niche to produce these or whether I was simply not looking in the right place. In any case, please continue to send me links and leads-as well as corrections (I did this rather hastily). I will post the final compilation in the next few weeks-once your suggestions are exhausted. I would eventually like to see a one stop shopping clearing house created where e

    P. de Bruijn (2010). The spatial industrial organization of innovation. Date of news: 24 August 2010 This thesis can be seen as a step to arrive at a theory of spatial industrial organization. As theoretical building blocks of spatial industrial organization, use is made of spatial interpretations of two schools in industrial organization: transaction cost theory and the competence-based approach. It is argued that these spatial interpretations may provide a solution to points of criticism made in relation to cluster theory and territorial innovation models. Pieter de Bruijn conducted his PhD research at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, in the Department of Spatial Planning. He is now senior advisor Innovation Intelligence at the Ministry of Economic Affairs. He defends his PhD on 23 Sept. 2010.

Entrepreneurship and Business: A Regional Perspective Miguel-Angel Galindo, Joaquín Guzmán, Domingo Ribeiro 0 Resenhas Springer, 2008 - 308 páginas "This book examines the relationship between entrepreneurship, growth and regional aspects of business. The text offers two broad perspectives of entrepreneurship, a historical one and a comparative perspective. In the historical part, several examples of the co-operation between regional aspects and aspects of entrepreneurship are presented. The second part shows different aspects of entrepreneurship in a more and more globalizing world. Networking, the relationship between clusters and business innovation, economic transition and the links between social capital and business competitiveness are some of the topics."--BOOK JACKET.

The Production and Distribution of Knowledge Aard Groen 0 Resenhas Emerald Group Publishing, 2009 - 203 páginas The research and policy evaluations presented in these papers represent a uniquely valuable evolving record of policy and research on high technology small firms through many changes in economic conditions and government policy approaches over more the a decade and a half. Specific issues in the book series cover many of the key industrial development policies adopted by developed, and developing, national governments since the early 1990s including, for example, writings on policy and practice concerning science parks, incubators, academic enterprise, industrial networking and the role of clusters in nurturing high technology small firms formation and growth. In particular, the on-going problem of early stage high technology funding has been a theme of constant concern since1993, and because it remains resistant to amelioration, will endure into the future. Both the conference and the ensuing book series represent a pre-eminent vehicle for all the major international researchers concerned with high technology small firms to present their work to each other and the wider public.

The Geography of Competition - 0 views

This book provides a comprehensive, up-to-date, and expert synthesis of location theory. What are the impacts of a firm's geographic location on the locations of customers, suppliers, and competitors in a market economy? How, when, and why does this result in the clustering of firms in space? When and how is society made better or worse off as a result? This book uses dozens of locational models to address aspects of these three questions. Classical location problems considered include Greenhut-Manne, Hitchcock-Koopmans, and Weber-Launhardt. The book reinterprets competitive location theory, focusing on the linkages between Walrasian price equilibrium and the localization of firms. It also demonstrates that competitive location theory offers diverse ideas about the nature of market equilibrium in geographic space and its implications for a broad range of public policies, including free trade, industrial policy, regional development, and investment in infrastructure. With an extensive bibliography and fresh, interdisciplinary approach, the book will be an invaluable reference for academics and researchers with an interest in regional science, economi

This volume investigates the dynamics of regional performance in advanced countries and the mechanisms that allow some regions to grow more rapidly than others, to become and remain more competitive in the long run. The authors show how the capability of regions to innovate is enhanced by a large number of factors, including entrepreneurship, clustering, creativity, new technologies, human capital and the presence of internal, intra-regional, and external, extra-regional, connections. The book is mainly theoretical, but all chapters also analyze the policy consequences. Moreover, the empirical results reinforce the theoretical findings and as such are more broadly applicable and not bound to the specific case. The general reach of the theoretical arguments, and the focus on policy consequences, make this book helpful for both scholars and policymakers.

A análise espacial, rea
