    The emphasis of the texts is on how Christians began to modify their attitudes about persons of all races and ethnicities. In particular, page 14 describes how European missionaries treated all the freed slaves who were returning to their homes. This behavior impressed the Nigger king and other tribes, and it was evident that they were the most effective at spreading Christianity. To underscore what was just said, christian missions were created in the area at the same time as agreements were negotiated to abolish slavery and establish new legal trade with local rulers.

      On attempts by European missionaries to reconcile their service to both African communities and to European expansion, which obliged them to create a justification for their civilizing mission, Christianity had a political role in the interior of southern Africa during the 1850s. In the end, missionaries pushed for increased European influence in the interior, which quickly spread and gave rise to colonial power. African perceptions of Christianity and its connection to Europeans underwent a huge shift in the 1850s when many Africans began to view Christian doctrine and paraphernalia as comparatively benign oddities that might be used for their communities' good. They are unaware that this is not the case, though. This is crucial because it sets up how the missionaries gained more clout.

  • INDEX Early Missionaries THE KONGO In 1490 the first missionaries came to Sub-Saharan Africa at the request of King Nzinga of Kongo (also known as the Manikongo). They came with craftsmen who rebuilt the Manikongo's capital in stone at Mbanza Kongo (in the North of modern Angola), and baptised the King. King Nzinga's son Afonso (born Nzinga Mbemba) was sent to Portugal to study and amazed the catholic hierarchy with his intelligence and intense piety.
