  • Character ChartsGraphic organizers, like the sample below, can be used to help students organize information about major and minor characters in a text.  Completed character charts are useful tools for writing essays and studying for tests. They are often used to record information about literacy characters, but can also be adapted to record information about historical figures.
  • Document Analysis TemplatesAnalyzing historical documents requires students to identify the purpose, message and audience of a text. Document Analysis Forms are graphic organizers that guide students through a process of identifying important background information about a document (e.g. author/creator, date created, place, format, etc.) and using this data to determine the bias or perspective of a text.

    The title implies digital texts are more expensive, but the article states their functional cost is about the same. A digital version offers far more functionality for the about the same money, not to mention all the other learning resources provided by the iPad it runs on.     Yes, the digital books themselves have the same overall cost overtime as a traditional textbook, however the point the author is trying to make is that with the overhead cost of purchasing an iPad for each student, it costs significantly more per student to have iPad textbooks, than it would with traditional "book" textbooks. The title may be somewhat misleading, however for already cash-strapped districts it is an important question to ponder.

    Including the cost of an iPad in the cost of a digital textbook is like including the cost of the classroom desk on which a traditional textbook would sit. Most schools would not (and should not) invest in iPads solely or even primarily to facilitate digital textbooks. They invest in 1:1 environments for more important reasons (personalized learning, increased engagement, ubiquitous access to information, etc), and many schools are abandoning textbooks altogether. Waverly-Shell Rock middle school diverted its textbook dollars to the purchase of mobile apps for their students. Rapidly changing content results in open content options such as http://www.ck12.org
