The Global fund for women is part of a global women's movement that is rooted in a commitment to justice and an appreciation of the value of women's experience. As well as, the challenges women face vary widely across communities, cultures, religions, traditions and countries. They believe that women should have a full range of choices, and that women themselves know best how to determine their needs and propose solutions for lasting change. This organization is involved in grant making so that it can seed, strengthen and link women's rights groups based outside the United States working to address human rights issues, which focus on issues such as girls\education, violence against women and economic independence.

This organization is very important because they recognize the many forms of violence against women, not only personal but also social. They are working toward creating peaceful communities while raising awareness to violence persisted against women. I like how they reach out to women around the world because I feel this strengthens the ties between women on a global sense. What women need to create change is money and the Global Fund is doing exactly this.

This speech given by Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton goes into how activism on behalf of violence against women has changed in the past few years. She explains that progress has been made, but that it needs to continue. This helps to attract global attention to the problem of violence against women. This is related to our class because it shows how action can have an effect on violence against women, and how changes in the future are necessary and can be made possible.

Global attraction to this issue of violence against women is pertinent in working towards solving it. This issue is usually in places were impunity rules over the perpetrators. The steps taken by global actors such as the United States in taking a stand against violence against women,and being proactive in implementing legislation to end it works to promote taking action on this issue. However, it is also important to note the areas were there is still work to be done as Hilary Clinton expresses.

"Say NO- UNiTE End Violence Against Women" is a campaign out of UNIFEM which aims to end violence against women worldwide through the activism, support, and help of people. The objective is have 100,000 "actions" performed globally by November 2010 that in some way help end violence against women, such as working in a shelter, donating money to an organizations, or taking an activist stance. There is a section where people can write in their name to stop the violence against women and tell governments to "make ending violence against women a top priority." I think we should all sign and try to take action!

The Spiritual Alliance to Stop Intimate Violence is an organization that advocates awareness on intimate violence as a global issue. The website provides information on family life and focuses on strengthening the partnership between parents and children.

I think this website is really important because it focuses on intimate violence which affects not only women but children as well. The majority of the other bookmarked websites primarily discuss violence against women, and although that is obviously extremely important, I think it is also very important to look at how violence against women in the home can affect children and the ways to help families cope with intimate violence and the ways we as a world can try and stop it. SAIV works to raise awareness about this issue that occurs around the globe by grassroots movements and by bringing these issues to different sectors of the government, two very important movements that help in creating change. This website and SAIV are very important to our class because they work to bring to light intimate violence as a global issue and the ways we can become active to stop the violence and help families affected by intimate violence around the globe.

In this book the author looks at the criminals and organizations that are responsible for exploiting the victims. She looks at the different groups of victims that are being exploited.

The Lancet 359:1232-1237 * This article does not directly deal with pornography, but merely touches upon it. I kept this article because it provides a lot of information about violence against women around the world. It provides the basis for my knowledge on violence in general and touches upon many different reasons for the violence. What helps me particular within my research is that it provides a global perspective on the violence which I hadn't been able to find in other research.

Activist groups in Pakistan pressure to reform the law to protect women from violence. The U.S.A is also realizing how vital it is to incorporate violence against women in their international agenda. Violence against women is starting to be seen as a global struggle that crosses national interests.

I have bookmarked a specific event that takes place every year under The United Nations Population Fund. As an international development agency, UNFPA works across countries to spread awareness and to work towards equal rights and opportunities for all people. Working with the government of a specific country, the agency works on sustainable development taking into account the needs of the population now and for the future. This event specifically, the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women is done every year and speaks out across the world on issues of gender violence. Apart from the set aside 16 days, this page lays out 16 ways the UNFPA is working to end this violence. As well, the website lists various other events they are hosting as well as sites to visit that show social and multi-media space on a variety of issues that one can use to network and learn more on such issues.

This is a great website, and I love that it happens every year. By not only providing websites and other resources for people to look at, just their presentation, as a worldwide event, makes it very effective in getting the idea of how bad violence against women really is. One thing that I thought was most effective about it is that it is not just the US, and not just a country that we hear about often with regards to their violence against women, but global. This globalness is very important because if someone who knew little about violence against women were to see this, then they could possibly become aware that violence against women is not just in the US, and not just in the rest of the world, something that is very important to ending violence against women.

I'm glad that you came across this website because people want to get involved and sometimes do not k now were to start. I feel like I can send some of my friends to this website to get started. I like that the ideas also involve men; it's something that everyone can do and feel good about. One of the 16 ways that jumped out at me was "Publicizing the issue of acid burning and other unusual forms of gender violence" because it is something that it is not spoken about and given a lot of attention to.

Reproductive Health Matters 3(5, Pregnancy, Birth Control, STDs and AIDS: Promoting Safer Sex):104-116. This article is important because it looks at how HIV and rape are related in the US. It also looks at prophylaxis like another source on prophylaxis in South Africa. This is very important because it will help to give the paper a more cross-cultural approach. It argues that not enough attention has been paid to the transmission of HIV during rape because in the US the transmission rate is lower, and is thought of as lower. However, looking at the effects of the transmission in the US is just as important as looking at it in South Africa to give it a more global perspective.

This is an important source because it gives information on women who are affected by HIV/AIDS in the world, and is an easily accessible site for people around the world who have access to the internet. It not only gives important information on where to get help and what to do, but it also gives some information on other countries, adding yet another global perspective. More importantly, it focuses on the effects that can occur from being infected with HIV/AIDS. This is important to know in order to understand the effects on quality of life that HIV can have.

This is a link to "Man Up" , a group dedicated to helping youth end violence against women and girls, it's slogan being that violence against women is everyone's issue, not just a women's issue. They give out grants to youth activists to start programs against domestic violence in their communities, and work through a number of mediums including sports, music, technology, and art.

While I fully support any non-profit organization's attempt at gaining awareness and participation by female and male youth alike, I would also argue that I have seen better-designed and more informed websites to encourage participation for the cause to stop violence against women. The section with the definition of different types of violence was rather informative, but I wish the "Get Involved" section would have been more in depth and easy to navigate to links of promoted involvement.

This article is about 6 students in India who chose to do a project on domestic violence which included an exhibition using props that symbolized the atrocities that women face. The article also deals with some of the reactions of the people that saw the exhibits.

This site does a great job at educating in hopes to eliminate the existence and growth of sex trafficking around the world but specifically in the United States. The short clip emphasizes that this is a growing problem and that if it doesn't stop expanding that it will eventually hit home.

Powerful clip, a sure slap of reality. This does an amazing job of eliciting the desire to change society, in particular human trafficking but on a broader scale violence against women. I wish this clip could be more broad casted in every day life as it hits all the "high points" of the issue in a very effective way.

Sex trafficking is one of the other issues that should be spoken about more often, like the website informs "if it is not stopped you will be effected". I feel like this is effective because of the films that this organization has created. They have documented these stories so that people can get upset and do something about it. I agree with them because we don't get uncomfortable enough which leads us to look the other way and pay little attention to problems like sex trafficking.

Miller, Barbara D. 2001. "Female-Selective Abortion in Asia: Patterns, Policies, and Debates." American Anthropologist. 102(4): 1083-1095. This article discusses aspects of Asian culture that support son preference, the leading cause for sex-selective abortion and female infanticide. It is important to understand a culture's belief system in order to make sense of their communal actions. Miller, by her use of cultural anthropology, has helped me better understand not only Asian culture, but the global context to explain prenatal gender discrimination.

"V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery." V-Day is a movement started by Eve Ensler. This organization promotes awareness and education through performance as well as carries out campaigns worldwide. Their purpose is to generate media coverage and instigate dialogues especially with the younger demographic. This way they have been making an impact and contributing to end violence against women and girls.

Projansky, Sarah. Autumn, 2001. "The Elusive/Ubiquitous Representation of Rape: A Historical Survey of Rape in U.S. Film, 1903 - 1972. Cinema Journal 41: 63 - 90. This article was a wonderful article for me to begin my research with because it led me into many of the topics I wish to discuss within my research paper. In fact, the article was a main instigator in my changing my research topic solely to film and its relation to rape, rather than film and pornography and their relation to rape. This article argues "that rape is a central theme in American cinema… [That] not a year has gone by since the beginning of cinema when rape, attempted rape, or other forms of sexual violence were not represented or alluded to in films" (63). Many of the topics that surface throughout this article will be key in explaining my own film selections and how they promote patriarchic ideals, the submission of women, and the desensitization of rape that film presents historically and globally to its viewers. Topics I will touch upon include Production Code regulations (from the beginning of film to present), rape in relation to women's vulnerability, independence and the family, rape in relation to economic and social class ambivalence, and finally, rape in relation to race. All these subtopics arise in differing aspects of each film I have chosen to consider in relation to my research topic. Overall, this article is the perfect push I needed to get my research started, and it will continue to be valuable as the holder of the bedrock ideas and topics I wish to present within my paper.
