  • wakening? The First Great Awakening, occurring around 1730 to 1760, had a profound impact on the course of the United States, especially during the latter half of the Eighteenth Century. Although not widely spoken of in modern times, the Great Awakening was a movement rooted in spiritual growth which brought a national identity to Colonial America.       They thought the  new world would be perfect, yet they built a cemetery (makes sense) and a prison.  If the society was going to be perfect with well-behaved citizens, then why do they need a prison?

      Is this a light/dark reference / symbol to the idea of the jail as an evil or "bad" place?  Or is it simply a statement of how dark the wood on the jail has become?

      Weeds seem to like the soil by the prison -- is there something about the Puritan community where evil can dwell?  Or does this follow the idea that people were sinners and in a perpetual state of needing to be redeemed?
