Paranapanema announced that it approved a capacity expansion and technology modernisation plan, supported by a positive macroeconomic outlook and favourable price trends for its products. The market will be boosted by Brazil's anticipated economic growth, and in particular by infrastructure, civil construction, electricity and green power projects. In addition, the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games will provide further support. Paranapanema will increase its refined copper capacity at its Dias D'Avila unit from 230,000tpy to 280,000tpy in H1 2012. The company will also install a precious metal refining plant at the same unit, scheduled to be operational in H2 2012. Paranapanema's copper semis division, Eluma, will expand its cold rolling capacity from 28,000tpy to 55,000tpy. Furthermore, hot rolled products capacity will rise from 60,000tpy to 200,000tpy whilst tube capacity from 18,000tpy to 36,000tpy. Investment of the entire plan for 2011-13 will amount to 630 million reais (US$377 million).

Antaike reported that sales income from the 'traded in' home appliances policy reached 150B yuan by the end of 2nd March 2011. In addition, volume of new and old appliances amounted to 40M and 41M sets respectively. Appliances included in the policy are TV sets, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and computers. The scheme has triggered a considerable consumption volume of copper semis, such as copper commercial tube used in the manufacturing of refrigerators and air conditioners.

The US Copper and Brass Fabricators Council has reported a 15.7% m-o-m increase in the US brass mill products trade deficit, taking net imports to 19.9Mlbs in March 2011. The principal suppliers to the US were Germany and South Korea, whereas most US shipments were to Canada, Mexico and China. The segment which saw the largest increase in trade deficit was flat rolled products which reached 6.5Mlbs in March, up from 3.8Mlbs in the previous month. In addition, the trade deficit of rods, bars and sections rose, whereas tube as well as alloy wire both experienced greater monthly gains in exports compared to imports.

German integrated copper producer Aurubis reported a 47% y-o-y increase in net income to €258M in H1 FY2010-2011 (1st Oct 2010 - 31st Mar 2011), up from €161M. H1 revenue increased by 42% y-o-y from €4.5B to €6.5B. This outcome was mainly the result of higher copper prices and continued demand for copper caused by the global economic recovery. However, demand from China steadied in Q2 due to a tighter credit environment, as did demand from Europe, due to increasing economic instability. The wire and cable industry performed well, experiencing strong demand from the automotive and domestic appliance sectors. Likewise, copper strip was supported by demand from the coinage as well as special material sectors. On the other hand, copper tube and flat rolled products struggled to recover as a result of strong competition from lower cost substitutes.

Some Chinese air conditioner manufacturers, including GREE, Hisense and Haier have recently increased their selling prices by RMB100 - RMB200 nationwide in response to rising costs, mainly attributed to higher copper prices. Chinese air conditioners are now, on average, RMB463 more expensive than last year, representing a price increase of 16.3%. It was reported that sales over the past year increased and production rose by 41.8% y-o-y in H1 2011. Demand is expected to weaken as autumn approaches but prices may climb further depending on copper price movements and the degree to which manufacturers' margins are squeezed by the recent removal of the energy-efficient air conditioner subsidy.

Antaike reported that most Chinese copper semis fabricators orders decreased in June 2011 from the previous month. Copper commercial tube, copper wire and copper wirerod output rose 10% y-o-y in H1 2011. However, output growth of copper sheet and strip in the same period was weaker. Semis fabricators' profits fell attributed to high finance costs and high copper prices. These factors have also affected refined copper consumption.

"China has become the world's largest producer and consumer of plastic pipes. In 2013, China's plastic pipe output and demand reached 12.1 million tons and 11.117 million tons respectively, representing the respective year-on-year increase of 10.0% and 7.1%. The output of PVC pipes is higher than that of other plastic pipe varieties in China, followed by the output of PE pipes and PP pipes. In 2013, China's PVC pipe output hit 6.59 million tons, accounting for 54.5% of China's total plastic pipe output, while the output of PE pipes and PP pipes shared 40.5% together. "

That plastic pipe systems continue to gain market share through supplanting competing pipe materials such as copper, concrete and steel due to easy and low cost installation as well as long term performance, Stephen Boros who is also VP Engineering for Pipelines Plastics, LLC explained. "In North America, these inherent advantages are now further supported by the development of the shale oil and gas industry. This development not only benefits the energy market but also represents a more secure long‐term supply and cost advantage from a power costs to raw materials stand point. Technology transfer will undoubtedly propel the growth of demand for plastic pipe systems in other world markets."

Domestic copper pipe industry is asked to take a strategic restructuring to keep competitiveness while being faced with an important turnaround.
