2.2 million Australian homes to get free insulation - 0 views

  • Insulation may not be as sexy as solar panels or wind turbines, but it’s an important tool in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
  • The Australian Government is stepping up its commitment to the environment by installing ceiling insulation in 2.2 million homes— for free. The Government will also increase the rebates for solar water heating from AUD$1000 to AUD$1600.

shared by Glycon Garcia on 26 May 08 - Cached
  • BISBEE, Ariz (Reuters) - With energy prices going through the roof, an alternative lifestyle powered by solar panels and wind turbines has suddenly become more appealing to some. For architect Todd Bogatay, it has been reality for years.

A Ship That Floats On Bubbles | Got2BeGreen - 0 views

  • The bubbles travel along the hull, reducing friction and thus, increase gas mileage. Since ships are one of the largest consumers of diesel fuel in the world, so this idea is meant to get some attention along with some other ideas like boats attaching a giant wind turbine or adding parachute-like sails on the ship to increase efficiency.

Abu Dhabi's solar venture - 0 views

  • . Masdar, the oil-rich emirate’s $15 billion renewable energy venture, and Spanish technology company Sener on Wednesday announced a joint venture called Torresol Energy to build large-scale solar power plants in Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the United States.
  • The irony is too rich to leave unsaid: A leading oil producer invests billions in carbon-free energy while a leading consumer of fossil fuels - the United States - continues to subsidize Big Oil while while offering only tepid support for green technology
  • Torresol plans to build solar power plants using a technology it calls a Central Tower Receiver system. It’s similar to technology used by competitors like BrightSource in that fields of mirrors called heliostats focus the sun’s rays on tower that contains a receiver. In this case the receiver is filled with salt which when heated vaporizes water to create steam that drives an electricity-generating turbine. The company says it intends to have 500 megawatts of solar electricity online by 2012.

Post Kyoto: the state of Denmark | EnergyBulletin.net | Peak Oil News Clearinghouse - 0 views

  • The year 2001 brought an end to this, however. The new liberal-conservative government formed separate ministries for transport/energy and environment once again, 3 sea-based wind turbine parks were ditched, land based renewable energy was put in the freezer, energy research and development had their funding cut to almost zilch, and 800 people were made redundant in public environmental administration.

USA - CommScope to supply Groundsmart™ Copper Clad Steel grounding wire to B... - 0 views

  •
CommScope, Inc. will supply the Bishop Hill Wind Farm in Henry County, Illinois with its GroundSmart(TM) Copper Clad Steel solution, an alternative to solid and stranded copper that is increasingly in demand by utilities for its cost-efficiency and anti-theft characteristics. CommScope will provide 1.7 million feet of GroundSmart copper clad steel grounding wire to the project this year--the largest GroundSmart application to date. The Bishop Hills Wind Farm will include approximately 130 wind turbines. Developers of Bishop Hill said that they see GroundSmart as a simple solution to reducing projects costs without compromising the system's integrity. Copper clad steel is specifically designed to disperse fault currents and lightning strikes at a lower total cost of ownership compared to pure copper.

Third HVDC Platform Installed in the North Sea for Underground Renewables Transmission - 0 views

  • Using the Siemens technology installed on the platforms, the alternating current power generated by the wind turbines is transformed into direct current for efficient transmission to the mainland. At the associated land-based stations, the electricity generated by the connected wind farms is converted back into the alternating current power required for feeding into the transmission grid.
