Skylon Testing Success for Fine Tubes and Reaction Engines - 0 views

  • Fine Tubes used Inconel, a nickel alloy that has excellent heat resistance. Because of the amount of tubing required, it had to be as lightweight as possible. Inconel is a difficult material to shape and the thinness required meant it was easily damaged, so to fulfil Reaction Engines' requirements Fine Tubes installed completely new equipment for the tube cleaning process at its tube mill.

Germany - Wieland sees current demand as weak, 2012 outlook linked to impact of Euro De... - 0 views

  •
Wieland-Werke AG, the German fabricator of brass mill products, reported sales of 475,000t, down by 0.4% y-o-y in financial year 2010/2011. Turnover increased by 24% y-o-y to reach €3,287M and profits also rose to €45M in 2010/2011 after a loss of €6M in the previous year. The rise in turnover was mainly attributed to rising metals prices, while the company said that the increase in profits was caused by a product mix composed of a larger amount of value-added products. Wieland noted strong demand in the first six months of the period, which was offset by the Euro debt-crisis as a driver of significantly weaker demand in Europe during the latter half of the fiscal year. In addition, the company saw a fall in demand in Asia from Spring 2011 and continued very low demand in North America. End-use consumer demand was weak and impacted the electronics and electrical engineering sectors as well as vehicle production. Mechanical engineering was considered to be a bright spot in fiscal year 2010/2011.

Wieland-Werke AG, the German fabricator of brass mill products, stated that demand in 2012 began weakly. After January, orders rose only slightly, but demand from important markets in Asia and Europe declined, principally attributed to cautious buying as fears remained over the impact of the course of the euro debt crisis in 2012. In addition, the company is experiencing reduced demand from the electronics industry in Asia following the closure of several plants affected by the tsunami in Japan and flooding in Thailand. Wieland has also not seen any growth support from North America and is uncertain about the global outlook for demand in 2012 due to the unpredictability of the euro debt crisis.

Donald Sadoway: The missing link to renewable energy | Video on TED.com - 0 views

  • Donald Sadoway: The missing link to renewable energy
  • What's the key to using alternative energy, like solar and wind? Storage -- so we can have power on tap even when the sun's not out and the wind's not blowing. In this accessible, inspiring talk, Donald Sadoway takes to the blackboard to show us the future of large-scale batteries that store renewable energy. As he says: "We need to think about the problem differently. We need to think big. We need to think cheap." Donald S

This technology seems to me to be much more beneficial on a local scale, what if every home had its own battery, then home power generation becomes economically more viable for everyone. If you could show that a system like this could pay for itself in say 5 years then every home would want one. Plus for this to be implemented on a large scale requires massive investment that could be decades away. Share the technology and lets get it in homes by next year. Great ted talk. Jon Senior 0 Reply 1 hour ago: I agree 100%. Localised energy production would also make energy consumers more conscious of their consumption and encourage efforts to reduce it. We can invent and invent all we want, but the fast solution to allowing renewable energies to take centre stage is to reduce the base energy draw. With lower baseline consumption, smaller "always on" generators are required to keep the grid operational. Town and house-l

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Power Transformers Market - 0 views

  • The GCC power transformers market is expected to grow at a healthy CAGR during the forecast period. Saudi Arabia generated most of the revenue, followed by the United Arab Emirates. In addition to the prominent multinational companies, some local manufacturers have gained technology expertise by re-engineering, joint ventures and technology transfers, and they are moving into higher MVA ranges. Due to investments in various sectors in the GCC, the demand for power transformers has been steadily growing, and this trend is expected to continue.

Saudi Arabia - Saudi Cable signs major deals with Korean firms - 0 views

  •
The Saudi Cable Company announced that it has secured orders from two of Korea's biggest construction firms, taking its total order value for the month to over SAR1B (approximately US$266.6M). The Jeddah-based supplier of copper cables received a SAR63M (approximately US$16.8M) order from Doosan Company, a diversified firm covering construction and engineering among other sectors, and a SAR56M (approximately US$14.93M) order from Hyundai Engineering. Both mandates will be supplied in Q1 of next year.

Variable-speed Drives Cut Costs For Vehicle Parts Maker - 0 views

  • Mike Tennant, Preventive Maintenance Engineer for the plant, says: “Both the compressor and the chilled water pumps need to run 24/7 to service the constant production of the blow moulders. As well as the energy savings we are seeing, we are also gaining production benefits. With the variable-speed drive on the air compressor, we are getting a more consistent air pressure than previously.

8 Main Disadvantages of HVDC Transmission - 0 views

  • Some of the above-listed disadvantages can be eliminated with the use of new technologies. In particular, disadvantages such as a complete power fault of the HVDC transmission system during short-circuits inthe AC power system and reactive power consumption can be eliminated completely, or mostly, with the use of turn-off thyristors.Several research centers are working on improving high-capacity turn-off thyristors and also on new types of converter devices for high-capacity HVDC transmission. Finally, there are several new techniques for the perfection of grounding devices, providing for decreased electro-corrosion impacts and the formation of so-called “metal return”, which precludes the working current from flowing through the ground. Other techniques aimed at perfecting HVDC technology are also being developed (Koshcheev 2001).

Practices for grounding and bonding of cable trays - 0 views

  • A bare copper equipment grounding conductor should not be placed in an aluminum cable tray due to the potential for electrolytic corrosion of the aluminum cable tray in a moist environment. For such installations, it is best to use an insulated conductor and to remove the insulation where bonding connections are made to the cable tray, raceways, equipment enclosures, etc. with tin or zinc plated connectors.

Overview of Large Power Transformer - (Characteristics, Costs and Pricing) - 0 views

  • An LPT (Large Power Transformer) is a large, custom-built piece of equipment that is a critical component of the bulk transmission grid. Because LPTs are very expensive and tailored to customers’ specifications, they are usually neither interchangeable with each other nor produced for extensive spare inventories
