Sketchpad in HTML5: Why Flash is no longer relevant - 1 views

  • Back in the old days when the Web was young the the solution to the problem of rich interaction with an online resource fell to Adobe’s Flash. Thanks to HTML5, however, the browser does all the business and in a way that is open and accessible to all. Case in point: Sketchpad. I can’t embed it here, but feel free to check it out with any major new browser and report back how amazing it is. Go ahead and check it and let me know what you think. As you see loading is instantaneous and the ability to create rich interfaces all within the browser is amazing. I’m sold.

  • Bizarre Websites On Which You Can Kill Time With StyleBy Julia MayMay 25th, 2010Design42 Comments AdvertisementModern Web-building technologies allow designers to realize their most daring and creative ideas. Enhanced interactivity and a remarkable visual appearance can be achieved by means of such tools as Flash, JavaScript and Papervision3D, to name just a few. These strengths usually impress and entertain visitors and thus are often used for conceptual artistic presentations and promotional campaigns. In this post, you’ll find a collection of amusing websites that, by combining unconventional (and sometimes bizarre) ideas and clever JavaScript and Flash effects, will entice you to play on them for an embarrassing long time.[Offtopic: By the way, did you know that Smashing Magazine has a mobile version? Amazing Sand Painting - 3 views

Dont dare to miss this amazing Video Clip . . first read it properly.. This video shows the winner of "Ukraine's Got Talent", Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch. The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about £75,000. She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated. It is replaced by a woman's face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman's face appears. She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier. This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house. In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye. The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million. Kseniya Simonova says: "I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears. And there's surely no bigger compliment."

This is so amazing - a rare and wonderful talent! Reminds me of Stravinsky's L'histoire du soldat, which is a chamber ballet from the same period; but, this version is so similar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jhOIDmtCcs - you'll love this!
    •
that's really cool! wondering how they did the illustrations--stop action animation? I don't know why, but it sorta reminds me of this... http://ablestmage.wordpress.com/2009/12/03/1958-era-disney-predicts-transportations-future

Airplane! is a Remake of an Old Fifties Flick - 0 views

    • If you’ve ever wondered where Jim Abrahams and David Zucker came up with those hilarious jokes in Airplane!, the answer isn’t strictly their warped minds. Many of the scenes set up for the gags were directly cribbed from 1957’s Zero Hour! It’s a movie about an ex fighter pilot named Stryker, who… well, see for yourself.

      (YouTube Link)

And I’d always thought it was a spoof of the Airport movies. Of course, the writers did have warped minds, and saw this classic movie, replete with so many unfunny-yet- ripe-for-the-funny lines, as a perfect structure for the brilliant comedy it ultimately became.

NCDOT: I-40 Rock Slide News & Information - 1 views

    • This video provides a view of the I-40 rockslide project set in the geographic terrain of the Pisgah National Forest. The video begins with a view of Interstate 40 as it winds along the Pigeon River gorge, shows the rockslide happening, shows rock debris being hauled away last month, and then ends with an illustration showing where steel rock bolts will be installed to shore up the mountainside.

    •
This rockslide along I-40 west of Asheville NC has caused several months worth of transportation delays as this narrow mountain pass is a primary East-West route. Travellers and truckers have been forced to make a 3-5 hour detour to get around this roadblock into Tennessee. Construction continues to clear the debris and shore up the cliff-face, but it is taking a long time to complete.

Yes, it’s all so clear now! However, why Mr. Cleese chose to slip “Paris Hilton” (1:27) into the explanation is beyond me.

    1958-era Disney Predicts Transportation's Future « Ablestmage.com - 1 views

    • This short Disney segment, Magic Highway USA from the Disneyland TV show, throws around some ideas about how people will get around in the future. Some of them look a little more like something that might happen in 2200 AD perhaps, but it doesn’t really set a date necessarily ^_^

    Awesome Tilt-Shift Time-Lapse Video of NYC - 1 views

    • When I first stumbled on this, I initially thought it was a new clip from [GaS] friend Keith Loutit, but the video actually comes from New York-based photographer Sam O’Hare. Check it out:

Aero Director/ VFX artist Sam O’Hare has finished a short film, The Sandpit, that we’re very excited to be able to share with you. This short is inspired by films like Koyaanisqatsi (really, that’s not in spell check??), and time-lapse tilt shift photography.

Watch the video below as what looks like a ceramic tile floor slips below the water’s surface.

very cool. need to cut channels in the walls of the pool to allow water to flow better, but very cool, useful for parties

See the Future: Real 3D Digital Building Holograms (Wow!) | Designs & Ideas on Dornob - 2 views

    • Imagine someone rolling out what looks like a blueprint … only the buildings begin to literally pop off the page, showing you like never before what the structure will look like before it is even built. There is no way to describe how amazing this architectural innovation is – you have to see it to believe it (video below)! Forget the physical: you can now generate high-speed, life-like, visually three-dimensional and fully-automated holographic models of buildings cheaper, faster and more accurately than its ‘real life’ equivalents.
