Prophylactic mastectomy is surgery to remove either breasts to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Hoping avoiding future disease, some women at high risk of developing breast cancer elect to have both breasts surgically removed, a process called bilateral prophylactic mastectomy or preventive mastectomy.
