Some of the content in the article is a bit outdated since the article is from 2000. There have been quite a few innovations in the elearning world that can support new modes of interaction not covered here. Still, though, many of the suggestions are still valid and important.

Mississippi is a member state in the Partnershiop for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), the organization responsible for developing the next generation assessments which will be used to assess Common Core Standards in English and math.   The site provides a wealth of resources for assessment and teaching for common core standards.

An eight-part professional development workshop on Teaching Geography for teachers from Annenberg Learner.  This is a self-guided interactive workshop perfect for new teachers of geography.  There are model lessons here complete with resources, video narratives, and more.  A wealth of FREE resources.

Readworks.org is a reputable source of excellent lesson plans and reading passages focused on teaching reading comprehension.  This fall, they are developing over 1000 new CCSS aligned and Lexile-leveled non-fiction and literary passages and question sets.  This free resource will be an excellent supplement for teachers.

7 Steps to BYOT Here's what Georgia's Forsyth County Schools recommends when thinking about implementing BYOT. (Find more at www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/byot.) 1. Think carefully about your goals. 2. Survey students about what gadgets they own. 3. Get buy-in from parents and the community. 4. Determine rules for personal devices, and make sure everyone is clear on them. 5. Test connectivity by inviting students to bring in their devices. 6. Ask students about their experiences with their own gadgets. 7. Plan how you can use BYOT to develop fun, challenging activities for students.

In a press release on Monday, August 19, PARCC, the assessment consortium developing the CCSS tests, announced the release of additional paper-based sample test items in ELA and math. This is great news for us as we work to implement CCSS and PARCC-like assessment in our classrooms. On the PARCC website, you will see a list of links for each grade level and subject in the left sidebar. Visiting each link brings you to a page with a table describing the kinds of tasks that will appear on the PARCC assessment. Links to the sample items are within this table.
