James said the competition prepared her company for the acquisition. The 70-room hotel is near downtown Memphis, Beale Street and AutoZone Park, home of the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds and the Memphis International Airport, according to SHaD. Amenities in the property include a business center and indoor heated pool and hot tub. James' firm Duke Ventures plans to invest $500,000 to refresh the property with new paint, FF&E and additional cosmetic improvements. "The SHaDPitch competition and its curriculum provide an invaluable inside look at the hotel industry," James said. "It provided a roadmap and extensive network that gave me foundational knowledge of the hotel acquisition and ownership space. SHaD prepared my company, Duke Ventures LLC, to make the smartest investment possible. WYNDHAM HOTELS & RESORTS and investment firm Lafayette Square, led by Abhay Patel as managing director, recently launched a funding program to improve capital access for diverse hoteliers. The new program will support Wyndham's BOLD and Women Own the Room initiatives. Wyndham will work with Lafayette Square to connect qualified owners, aiming to provide up to $100 million in financing over the coming years. While not all will qualify, eligible hoteliers can use the funds to advance projects stalled by limited financing, the companies said in a joint statement. HOTEL BOOKINGS FOR Easter 2025 are up 16.8 percent from the same period last year, according to SiteMinder, a hotel distribution and revenue platform. The data, comparing bookings at the same properties across nine markets 30 days before Easter in 2024 and 2025, shows stronger demand, earlier bookings and growing interest in international travel. These global trends are mirrored in the U.S., where SiteMinder data showed a 14.98 percent rise in Easter weekend bookings as of March 18-an average of 3.6 more reservations per property compared to the same period in 2024. "With Easter falling later this year than in 2024, we're not just seeing stronger travel demand-we're seeing travelers rethink how they plan," said James Bishop, SiteMinder's vice president for ecosystem and strategic partnerships. "Earlier bookings and a rise in international travel are shaping this year's trends, with the later holiday creating more favorable conditions in many regions. But flexibility remains key-historically, domestic travelers tend to book closer to arrival, meaning the final guest mix and pricing dynamics could still evolve in the coming weeks."
