THE U.S. HOTEL construction pipeline grew 9 percent by both projects and rooms year-over-year, according to the latest U.S. Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics. It stood at 5,545 projects with 658,207 rooms at the close of the first quarter of 2023. Meanwhile, the hotel construction pipeline in the top 25 markets in the U.S. also registered year-over-year growth in the first quarter. Dallas had a record 184 projects with 21,810 rooms at the close of the first quarter, followed by Atlanta with 144 projects containing 18,242 rooms, Los Angeles tally stood at 118 projects with 19,066 rooms, Phoenix with 117 projects with 16,100 rooms and Nashville had 115 projects containing 15, 354 rooms, LE report revealed. In another report, LE analysts also detailed the leading franchise companies and their brands in the construction pipeline at the close of the first quarter. Marriott International tops the charts with 1,499 projects containing 181,377 rooms, followed closely by Hilton Worldwide, with a record-high count of 1,436 projects with 161,359 rooms, and then InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) with 809 projects containing 80,679 rooms. Combined, these three franchise companies comprise 68 percent of the projects in the total U.S. pipeline, LE said.

Pradip Bhol is now promoted as the cluster director of engineering at Courtyard By Marriott Surat, following his tenure as chief engineer. In the new capacity, he will oversee operations at Courtyard By Marriott Surat, Surat Marriott Hotel, Auro University, and forthcoming projects at Earth Space, Courtyard Surat said in a statement. Courtyard Surat is managed by Gujarat JHM Hotels and owned by the U.S.-based Auro Hotels, founded by the Rama family. "Pradip's promotion is a testament to his remarkable contributions and underscores Courtyard By Marriott Surat's commitment to recognizing and empowering talent within its ranks," said Vikas Sharma, Courtyard Surat's area general manager. "His leadership will undoubtedly chart new heights of success and further solidify the cluster's position. " Bhol has previously worked at Hyatt Hotels Corp., Accor, Lemon Tree Hotels, and Marriott International, the statement added.

INDIA-BASED ORAVEL Stays, the parent company of the global travel technology company OYO, has agreed to purchase G6 Hospitality, franchiser for the economy Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands, for $525 million from Blackstone Real Estate. The all-cash transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter, subject to customary closing conditions. Since launching in the U.S. in 2019, OYO has expanded to operate more than 320 hotels across 35 states, according to a joint statement from the companies. It aims to add around 250 hotels to its network this year, offering a technology suite, global distribution network and marketing expertise. "This acquisition is a significant milestone for a startup company like us to strengthen our international presence," said Gautam Swaroop, CEO of OYO International. "Motel 6's strong brand recognition, financial profile and network in the US, combined with OYO's entrepreneurial spirit will be instrumental in charting a sustainable path forward for the company which will continue to operate as a separate entity."

THE HOSPITALITY SHOW 2024 will feature sustainability programming, including the co-location of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance's Autumn Summit. The Show, produced by Questex and the American Hotel & Lodging Association, will take place in San Antonio, Texas, from Oct. 28-30. It will discuss net positive hospitality, share best practices, explore innovation opportunities and forge new collaborations. Lisa Checchio is the new chief commercial officer of Miami-based EBG, an e-commerce provider specializing in travel and entertainment. She joins from Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, where she was executive vice president and chief marketing officer. In the new role, Checchio will oversee marketing, customer experience, revenue growth, and related functions, including creative services, loyalty and CRM, corporate sales, client services, data analytics and communications, EBG said in a statement. She will report to Founder and CEO Brett Reizen and be based in EBG's New York office. "Lisa's proven track record in building brands and customer experiences will drive growth at EBG as we execute our strategic vision," said Reizen. "Ahead of our 25-year anniversary, her expertise will help us chart future success and strengthen EBG's leadership in the industry."

CHOICE HOTELS INTERNATIONAL relaunched its breakfast program at Comfort and Country Inn & Suites by Radisson to attract guests and distinguish its upper-midscale brands. It is introducing new items, including a breakfast bowl at select Comfort hotels and a biscuit sandwich at some Country Inn & Suites. The company is working with Florida's Natural and General Mills to source juice and cereal to supplement its breakfast menu, Choice said in a statement. "At Choice Hotels, we recognize that a hearty breakfast is a key part of what upper-midscale guests expect, and these upgrades, co-developed with owners, are designed to deliver more value for them and for Comfort and Country Inn & Suites guests," said Judd Wadholm, Choice's senior vice president and general manager of core brands. "As we've done for 85 years, we continue to invest in areas that help owners generate more revenue and attract repeat guests, working closely with them to chart that path."

INDIA'S ITC CONGLOMERATE plans to expand its hotel business internationally, focusing on neighboring countries and West Asia. The company recently demerged its hotels division, ITC Hotels Ltd., which will list on bourses in the next couple of weeks. The listing date for ITC Hotels is yet to be announced but is expected in the "next few weeks," PTI reported, quoting ITC Chairman and Managing Director Sanjiv Puri. The company aims to expand its portfolio from 140 to more than 200 hotels across India, PTI reported. Formerly a division of ITC, the hotel business will gain operational autonomy post-demerger. ITC shareholders will hold 60 percent of the new unit, with the parent company retaining the rest.
